So what is the difference between Stringing and Making Stuff Up

I suspect that the under-reporting of rarities by folks who don't have the confidence to stick their heads above the parapet is a bigger problem than stringing.

    Kruger, South Africa, October 2017

When I took this photo, I was assuming Crested Francolin but now it doesn't look quite right. Is it something else or am I just suffering from plumage that doesn't match the book? Andy

Collins Bird Guide for Android Survey

My wife and I have installed the Android version on our phones and its working well. However, I cannot see any instructions as to how to transfer the app to a new phone. I know that, on this thread, it was said to be easy to do it between Iphones. Anyone know how it works for the Android...

    Birdguides new system

Nothing to do with whether the new site is good or bad but I find it depressing to look at the "Birdmap" each morning and find nothing in West Central Scotland whilst the East has lots of nice stuff. If only I could move to Musselburgh!

West Freugh kite power firm seeks bird condition change

Interesting article on the BBC's website. Sounds a bit daft to me but they are trying to generate power by flying kites. The bit that caught my eye was "seeks bird condition change". Needless to say, they have decided the effect on birds is negligible because the species of concern, Hen...

    Neaderthals

The serious point is that it once again shows how well the grousers are fighting the war. They have got good economic statistics plastered everywhere; they have a nice, family friendly, parade to advertise and lots of influential friends (see Scottish Government stance on culling mountain...

Great bustards 'establishing' in the UK

I do wish I could believe that but Schedule One is little protection for birds that people want rid off,eg Hen Harrier. In this case, the attraction will be something along the lines of shooting "Britain's largest game bird" By loss of protection I did not mean "removal of protection status"...

Great bustards 'establishing' in the UK

Yes, till about 20 seconds after the protection is removed. Then, "bang, bang, bang" and it will all be over.

    Johannesburg Accommodation and birding

Hi Jos We are actually arriving two days ahead of other members of our party. The poor souls still have jobs! So, us retired folks decided to sneak in a couple of extra days. Need to be local to pick up our vehicles. Then we are off on our first ever, self-drive, camping safari. Should be...

    Johannesburg Accommodation and birding

Hi We will be in Johannesburg for 2 days in October before heading for the Kruger. I wondered if anyone can suggest a hotel or guest house near the airport that would make a good base? My guide book has nothing except the existence of the airport. Does that mean its not a a good choice of...

Anyone use the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ1000

Buy or make a hide a bit nearer the feeders; get the birds used to it; sit in it; beats long lenses.
