Has anyone made an attempt to go to remote Bernet Marshes

If you are planning to go this time of year stay until dusk and watch the pink feet come in. An amazing spectacle! The walk from Yarmouth is always good value as loads of stuff on Breydon and you rarely see another soul.

Think it's a fantastic idea - perhaps something for the Cley aristocracy to organise? I would definitely make a donation. Statue of him sitting on the East Bank would be fitting.

It's only about 4 miles - brisk walk, hurdle the stiles. No probs!!

It is a great spot - always plenty about and even more if you wander up the south wall towards GY. The Berney reserve is also well worth a look too. You can walk it from the Asda GY car park in easily under an hour and normally have the place to yourself. Fantastic at dusk with Pinkfeet coming...

Wouldn't worry too much - some people just desperate to be REALLY ANGRY about something!! I imagine most people read your post as is was intended and, like me, had a chuckle to themselves.

You are very close to Hickling Broad - loads of good stuff there!!

I agree that caution is always advised in these circumstances. However, there seems to be a pervasive attitude that it is a cardinal sin to want to view these rare breeders. In the late 70/80s my friends and I had the privilege of seeing Monty's, Red-backed Shrike, Golden Oriole, Golden...

Blimey Kayn, calm down! My point is that divulging info on these birds will have little or no effect on their breeding success. We didn't lose Red-backed Shrike as a breeding species because of newbie birders disturbing their nests! If we want to encourage Monty's breeding in the UK then we need...

Sympathise with you Hensona - there is a definite 'we know but we ain't telling you' culture on birdforum regarding certain breeding birds. I would make the following observations: (1) The success or otherwise of these rare breeding birds is almost entirely down to environmental factors. (2)...

Happy Birthday Penny!! Turning 30 is tricky but I'm sure you'll cope! I'm a regular follower of your blog - for my vicarious walks to the point! Much easier on the legs! Keep up the good work! And good luck in your new job.

No posts on Norfolk thread for 3 days now ... Was interested to know how Barn Owls seem to be fairing in other parts of the county? The winter of 2013/14 was disastrous for them in my neck of woods (east norfolk/suffolk border). Despite a good breeding season this summer - they still seem to...

    Quiet sites for waders

I agree, Breydon offers a wide variety and if you time your visit for high tide then decent views from the hide near Asda. If you are on your own then get the train to Berney - there's a reed screen there which often offers good views. If u get there for dawn or dusk at this time of year there...

Thank you - that made me chuckle! Swift Audubons were the height of sophistication when you were 14 in the late 70s!! Most of us had a massive pair of 10 x50s, ones that your Grandad had in the war - probably last used on HMS Hood!
