    Cornwall Moths for ID/Confirmation

Eudonia angustea and Celypha lacunana Agree with others I separate Lunar Underwing and Beaded Chestnut by shape and angle of the kidney and oval marks (stigmas). In Beaded Chestnut they are narrower and angled towards each other.

    Moths for ID - Ireland

Just weighing in with local knowledge and notes. The first is definitely Double Square-spot, 2nd as has been decided is festucae and 3rd is indeed Square-spot Rustic. Any claims of Triple-spotted Clay and Lempke's Gold Spot in Ireland will probably need to be supported by specimens. They are...

    Rivulet or Small Rivulet

Page 55 in Skinner 2009 My interpretation of the Waring text is the 2nd indentation in Rivulet is shorter....but smaller is open to misinterpretation since as you've pointed out they can be uneven in Small Rivulet...meaning one is larger and one smaller ;) BTW agree with Small Rivulet

    Shieldbugs.

Remarkably (to me) I found a load of these on a road a week ago.:eek!: Its quite a quiet road, but plenty had been squashed. I have no insight on why they were on the road

    First Damsel of the Spring.

Lots of activity with dozen's of dragonflies emerging. Four-spotted Chasers and Hairy Dragonfly. I took a time-lapse of a Hairy Dragonfly emerging. It's on youtube and while I'll strive to get a better one, I think its worth watching

    The Ladybird thread

My brother found a 2-Spot Ladybird in his house. may well be first reported from Co. Wicklow. The same house that the Republic of Ireland's first Harlequin ladybird was found last November.

    First Damsel of the Spring.

9 Hairy Dragonfly emerged past 2 days. The one with crumpled wing stayed put overnight. The wings are separated and I think it should be able to fly. Also 100s! of Large Red Damselfly emerging with first seen on 10th and a single Azure Damselfly today. These are all very early dates for Ireland.

    March Moths

380 moths in the actinic trap this morning. :eek!: My fingers froze as well when counting them :-C The trap was under a flowering sallow. It was mild to 2 am and then the sky must have cleared as the temp plummeted to below 3C 0663 Diurnea fagella 2 0670 Depressaria daucella 15 0701...

    Poss Tawny Pinion

I also suspect it is Tawny, but the photo comes up quite small at my end. I'd like to see a bigger photo.

    March Moths

Looking forward to getting some gaps filled. Early and late species generally under recorded. Flowering sallows are great for placing traps so I'd bear this in mind on your travels. I have placed a trap among Sallow tonight though I think the weather is not so good so the return may not be better.

    March Moths

Wicklow Ireland 4th March 2011 A bumper catch with me. 270moths!! 125w MV Temp 5-6C so not especially mild, but cloudy all night. 2nd highest single count of Clouded Drab in the MothsIreland database - nearly 1400 records. There was a higher count in Donegal last year. The trap is nowhere near...

    Travel Moth Trap?

Just to qualify my unsupported statement, I tried a moonlander in the interests of research. It may well have its place in a tropical setting but IMO not in this part of the world. Also the robustness is dubious. I tried it with both 40w actinic and 125w MV. The lights attract moths but...

    Moth ID - E Ireland

Sorry, its Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet. Large twin-spot carpet is unrecorded in Ireland. In my experience just a few miles away, this form makes up about 60-70% with the red form making up the rest. Haven't got round to going through the others.
