    Spotted Sandpiper at Olhao

Just returned to the hotel from a quick walk around the lagoons on the south-west side of Olhao, just west of the Real Marina Hotel and saw a summer-plumaged Spotted Sandpiper. Bird was feeding on first lagoons along north side of path but then flew towards tidal zone and couldn't be relocated...

    Algarve, Portugal 12/09/13 to 19/09/13

A weeks 'non-birding' holiday produced some nice birds. It was good to be back in the Algarve. Based at Olhos de Agua, a combination of early morning visits and a few brief stop overs en-route during the day managed to help build a reasonable trip list. Not sure of the status of Ruddy Shelduck...

    Kumlien's candidate in Oxon?

Just been looking at pictures of the second-winter Iceland Gull in Oxon yesterday but a couple of things appear to favour Kumlien's. Notably the darkish centres to the primaries and the dark eye. Pics from Oxon Bird Log here and here. Any other opinions? Brian ___________ Birding Today

Glaucous Gull in the Tame Valley (Staffs/Warks) UK

There was an undoubted 2w Glaucous Gull in this area on January 28th, but a bird seen on 29th was also claimed as a 2w Glaucous Gull. For me it looks more like a leucistic Herring Gull. Although the pic is blurred, the bill lacks the sharp demarcation and the overall structure favours Herring...

    Gulls at Throckmorton, Worcestershire

Throckmorton Landfill Site and the adjacent lagoons have attracted an excellent run of interesting gulls so far this year including several Caspian Gulls and Iceland Gulls. Amongst the latter has been a second-winter individual, considered by at least one observer to be a Kumlien’s Gull, while...

    Phalarope at Elmley, Kent

Just noticed on Surfbirds Scarce Bird Gallery the photos taken today of the 'Grey' Phalarope at Elmley RSPB. This bird has been reported as a Grey for days now, but based on these photos it is undoubtedly a Red-necked. The pale tramlines, restricted nape markings and thin, all dark bill all...
