    Working the ol' patch...

New lifer, Black-Throated Blue Warbler. It seems that fall migration has brought in a lot of warblers... Also got very good views of a YCNH, though they're rather plain now that the breeding season is over and stuff. Also saw usual Great Egret, Eastern Towhee, Mallards, etc.

    Birds on the beach!

Yesterday we (my family and the family of one of Mom's friends) went to the beach. Being the nerd I am, I took my bins. Good thing I did, 'cause the water was too rough to go in any appreciable depth. As well as the ubitiquous Ring-Billed and Laughing Gulls, I found some Forster's Terns among...

    Glue Traps: Warning

I just got home from church. Since we go in and out of the house through the garage (back) door, we go through the garage. I noticed a tail and pair of legs sticking out of the back of one of the glue insect traps on the garage floor. They belonged to an unfortunate Carolina Wren that...

    Cardinal Molting

I have several juvenile cardinals in my backyard - at the absolute very least, a brood of 2 males and 1 female. This morning, I looked out the window (conveniently located right next to this computer) and saw that one of my males had developed his black face mask! About how long will it be...

    Ernesto and the birds

It's awful weather out here (tropical storm conditions I think) and the birds are STILL scarfing down the peanuts. Chickadees, titmice, cardinals, jays - I didn't even have the heart to drive off the grackles. The dog wanted out, so I went out with her into our swamp of a yard so I could bring...

    Lots of Ospreys!

Dad and I just came back from First Landing Park. I've never seen so many ospreys in my life before - or so many nests! They are really beautiful and amazing birds. Also, I saw some RWBs, a chickadee, some weird Heron (Brown above, white below, long orange bill, sitting in a tree), and a skink.

    Rat near the feeders!

On Monday I saw a rat near the feeders, nibbling on corn muffin crumbles that I left out. On Tuesday, he was again in our yard! We're worried that he might carry germs or bring his rat buddies over (which will lead to even more germs). He doesn't look like one of those nasty city rats which...

SE Pennsylvania - Tuesday thru Thursday

Went for our yearly visit to Gramma and Grampa's house in the deciduous woods bordering Amish farm country. Very tired from being in the car for several hours with annoying sister and bored brother, so no detailed accounts. Seen going to/from the house: GBBG Barn Swallow Turkey Vulture Great...

    Grackle ID

Amongst the ravenous flocks of grackles at my feeders, I saw a strange one. It's the shape and size of the other grackles but medium brown all over with lighter feathers on its wings and brown eyes. I'm guessing it's a juvenile, but I also think it might be a female Boat-Tailed who got lost.

    Your feeder favorite?

Out of all your feeder birds, which one do you like the best and why? For me it's a tie between the chickadees, blue jays, and cardinals. The chickadees are hands-down the cutest little guys to come to the feeder, and I love it when they wait for ME as I finish filling my feeder or feed just...

    Toucher of Hearts - Edgar

A tribute to the brown thrasher fledgling who touched our hearts. My style isn't exactly photorealistic, so keep that in mind. Done in colored pencil and ink.

    The Saga of Edgar

Here, in one whole piece, is the story of Edgar the Brown Thrasher fledgling: I was looking out the window and saw him there, just sitting on the ground under a bush. He seemed to be fine and looked like he was waiting for his parents to come back. But when my beagle came out, she found...

    Another day by the river

The very first thing I saw was a glorious Great Egret. They are such magnificent birds. After, it was relatively quiet until I saw a juvenile Eastern Towhee that seemed to be under the care of a pair of cardinals. Then I saw another Great Egret fishing in the marsh grasses. But the sky held...

    Wren ID

Found a wren at the park near the river banks, though it itself was singing from some bushes. It had more white markings than a Carolina Wren and a buzzy, trilling call, kind of like an insect. My hunch is Marsh Wren. You?

    Dog Chasing Fledgling

My beagle doesn't bother the birds at the feeders, but I just dragged her in from chasing a Brown Thrasher fledgling. She actually caught it and had it on its back and squawking. The bird is fine, but I was surprised that Jessie would do that. Then, as I was typing this up, Mom called. I...

    Life List at 15

In ABC order. Most were seen in Virginia, with any western birds being seen in California. I only post what I am sure that I have seen, so this list is probably incomplete. Those starred were seen in my local patch. 1.Acorn Woodpecker 2.American Crow* 3.American Goldfinch* 4.American Robin*...

    Fledglings at Feeders

Have you seen any fledglings at your feeder? This evening I was lucky to see a Carolina Wren going to my Suet feeder to top up while bringing food to a smaller, paler version of himself. The kid seemed to enjoy eating the crumbs from the suet feeder. I also have a question: If birds bring...

    Mystery Raptor

I was walking my dog today in the rain and saw a small bird, the size of a pigeon or blue jay, perches high in a tree. After much waiting, it took off with a cry I can't quite remember. It had a hawk-like head and a tail sharply banded with black and white. Any ideas?

    Crappy day on the river

I read that if you just sit and wait, birds will come to you. So I tried it and...it didn't work. Between my impatience, getting spooked by insects, and being chased out of the park (ever since they turned it into an art school, closing time has been 5 o'clock. I'm a fervent supporter of the...

    Birding in Hampton Roads, Virginia

Today: I saw for the second walk in a row a beautiful Great Egret right next to the Lafeyette River. I managed to get very close, but Jessie's jingling tags scared it away. Both feeders were empty, so I filled them and spread the suet crumbs out for the Thrashers. A female Cardinal and one...

    Skates in VA Beach Surf?

Last night I went fishing with my dad, and we caught not one, not two, but THREE clearnose skates! And we were bottomfishing in the VA Beach Surf in the evening. Why would there be skates so close to the shore?

    Juvenile Hawk help

Yesterday my dad and I saw a hawk in the local park, which is a mix of forest, marshland, and brushy habitat. This hawk was a brown buteo with dark streaks on the underside and a white tail banded with brown on the end. I think it's a juvenile red-tail, but it could be a red-shouldered.

    Clay Day Sightings

I've been going back and forth to my local park today, 'cause there's a clay festival featuring Seagrove, NC artists. My sightings: Cardinals Brown Thrashers Adult and Juvenile Yellow-crowned Night-Herons Great Egret Some kind of warbler feeding a cowbird fledgling :-C And...a hawk! This...

    Poor Scruffy...

...for that is the name of the now-bald cardinal that comes to my feeders. When I first saw him he only was missing feathers around his eyes. Gradually it encompassed his face, and now the poor little dude is bald. Good thing he has me, or he'd have to go out and forage and show his buddies...
