    Istanbul Layover

Hi all, I'm planning a trip in May which will likely have me laying-over for 24 hours in Istanbul. I was wondering if anyone can recommend a guide for a morning birding session close to the airport. Thanks. JH

    Junco - Pennsylvania

I'm just double checking...this is just a rather brown female Slate-colored Junco, not a more exotic subspecies. Correct?

A Week in Kuwait and the UAE (and an hour in Oman)

I recently tacked a week in Kuwait and the UAE onto an organized tour in Ethiopia. It was partly for sightseeing and partly for birding. In a little over 3 days of birding I saw 89 species, 17 of which were lifers. Not bad for countries that basically consist of big cities and deserts. A lot...

    Argentina Trip Report - October-November 2022

In November of last year, I joined a cruise to Antarctica with Rockjumper, which gave me the opportunity to do some birding in Buenos Aires and the nearby Pampas as well in Tierra del Fuego. Today I loaded a trip report into Cloudbirders.com. A link to that report is here. Note that it...

Which Grebe? Lehigh County, PA, USA

We had a small fallout of waterfowl this morning in Lehigh County, PA. There was a small flock of Horned Grebes (which is the expected species), but one grebe stayed by itself. I didn't get great pics, but it just looks "different". I see some black below the eye, I don't really see rufous on...

    Dowitcher - Bath, Pennsylvania

Ok, time for another dowitcher. Short-billed or Long-billed? Short-billed is more common, but Long-billed isn't unheard of here.

    Shorebird - Trexlertown, Pennsylvania, USA

I had a shorebird this morning in a grass field in a township park. It stuck out to me as being long billed and very grey. It was clearly smaller than a Killdeer, so I'm pretty sure it's a calidris. My thinking is a non-breeding plumage Dunlin, but I'd like a second opinion, especially since...

Quick Trip to Utah and Idaho, USA - August 2021

I just posted a trip report for a short trip I just completed to Utah and Idaho on Cloudbirders. It was supposed to also include Nevada, but the road to the Himalayan Snowcock site was washed out so we skipped that. I saw 142 species, and got one lifer - Cassia Crossbill. Enjoy! JH

    Juvenile Buteo - Eastern Pennsylvania

I found a buteo this morning here in Lehigh County, PA. I'm not especially good with perched juvenile buteos - I'm much better with them in flight - but I think this is a juvie Red-shouldered Hawk, rather than a Broad-winged. Neither are especially common here, but since migration has started...

Flycatcher - Lehigh County, Pennsylvania USA

I had this little guy in the pouring rain this morning. It was perched on a wire about a foot off the ground on the shore of a lake. Willow Flycatchers nest in the brush on a different shore of the lake, but this area is more wooded. Eastern Wood-pewees nest in the woods nearby, but I've...

Dowitcher - Lehigh Valley, PA, USA

All, A dowitcher was found yesterday at a retention pond near Allentown, PA yesterday. It was called a short-billed, which is the most likely species, but I saw it today and it's got some features which make me think long-billed is on the table. What do the experts think?

    Sandpiper - Bethlehem, PA, USA

I had this sandpiper this morning at a retention pond. Pectoral is expected - and that's what I think it is - but I wanted to eliminate Baird's because it looked very long-winged when I first saw it. What I can see in the pics: - An all black bill. Every pic I see online of Pectoral shows a...

Pale Junco - Lehigh Valley, PA, USA

Hey all. I found this junco this morning. I think it's just a paler than usual Slate-colored but I wanted to double check in case it's something more unusual. Thoughts?

    Shrikes near Frankfurt

Hi all, I have a 14 hour layover in Frankfurt in early November on the way to S.Africa. When Cornell split Great Grey Shrike off from the Northern Shrike, Great Grey became a potential lifer for me. I figure I'll take this window to go looking for one. Can anybody advise a reliable place to...

    Lovebirds in Phoenix

I'm going to be making a quick stop in Phoenix next weekend on the way home from a pelagic trip in San Diego. Anybody know any reliable locations (stake-outs) for Rosy-faced Lovebirds? I'll be staying right near the airport and I'll have a car, so I have flexibility. TIA, Jeff

    Cuckoo - Korea

All: I saw this cuckoo in a small town outside of Seoul on July 22nd. I was hoping it might be an Oriental Cuckoo, but after looking hard at this photo I concluded it was a Common Cuckoo But just to be sure I wanted to run it by everyone. Thoughts?

Great Blue or Tricolored? - Bombay Hook, DE

All, We saw an immature heron in a small pond at Bombay Hook on Saturday (Aug 6th). It was close to a great egret and clearly appeared smaller than the egret to all four of us in the car. When we first looked at it, we thought an odd tricolored, mainly because of the size, but now we're...

Trip to the Caucasus - April 30th to May 15th

Hi All, I just finished a trip to Georgia and Armenia. I put a trip report for the vacation on Cloudbirders. The trip report is here. The trip was built around a short Birdquest tour to Georgia. I added some birding in Armenia before travelling to Georgia, along with a couple of days along...

Another Coop / Sharpie ID Challenge - Pennsylvania

All: A friend of mine took this picture out his office window here in Allentown yesterday. We've historically had a pair of Cooper's hawks nesting in that location, but this guy has some sharpie characteristics, specifically the short neck and the forked tail. But I also see shorter outer...

    Shearwaters from Istanbul Ferries

I'm going to be stopping in Istanbul for one night on my way back from my tour in the Caucasus. I only have one target bird there: Yelkouan Shearwater. Most of the reports I've read talk about taking the boat tour up to the Black Sea and back. Is that really necessary or can you see them...
