new guide of the birding spots of France

Please see my comments between the *** "As a conclusion, we believe that Mr Williams' comment essentially show that we've made it to our aim : providing a general overview of the country with synthetic information to the benefit of birders willing to a first outlook into the country, and...

new guide of the birding spots of France

I don't think it's a case of up to date info, there is plenty of that available on the Faune websites around France. I honestly rushed out to buy this to see what it would say on the places, I know very well, the region where I live (Lorraine), and on the the region where I've been on holiday a...

new guide of the birding spots of France

If the totally inaccurate info on my region is continued throughout this book then I wouldn't bother. Little crake is a former breeder on my local patch and is a regular spring and autumn migrant. Little crake was suspected of breeding there and there hasn't been one single record there for at...

    Black-winged kite Lourdes Airport?

I wouldn't be remotely surprised, their stronghold in France is in the SW and they are spreading slowly north and seemingly increasing at a steady rate as you can probably imagine from all the records in the netherlands etc etc. I've even found one where I live near Verdun in November 2009 so...

    Wintering Wallcreeper

Last March I saw an adult male Wallcreeper in a quarry near commercy in la meuse, Lorraine, North eastern France. It has been seen again yesterday and at the weekend. Presumably that means it will spend the winter there. If anyone wants details, please get in touch

    Frejus

Looking on Faune PACA, the Slender-billed Gull colony at Hyeres is doing well this year. Last year they abandoned and were difficult to see, this year quite easy. Check out the LPO pages for Hyeres too, there are guided walks onto the 2 different salins that are well worth doing.

I second that, hire a boat and see Griffons and Crag Martins.

    South of France

I posted this in the Frejus thread too which could be of use. The salins at Hyeres should be reasonably good at this time of year. Plenty of Flamingos, good chance of Slender-billed Gulls and passage waders should just be starting to move through in reasonable numbers, Marsh Sands, Wood Sands...

    South of France

I was at la crau in June and didn't see Little Bustard at the Peau de Meau reserve but I did bump into an english birder who told me the fields south of Aureille were good quality grassland that held LBs and good numbers of Rollers.

    Your Birding Nemesises?

Great Snipe. A tale of woe for me. Saw the one at Fazackerly that may or may not have been one and therefore untickable on the views I had, and I wasn't satisfied that I could id it anyway so left it at that. Couldn't go to Spurn / Flamborough for THAT weekend in September 1993 when at least...

What new species of bird could start nesting next in Uk?

Interesting to note that Pygmy Cormorant is spreading and increasing, can anyone please fill me in on exactly where they are up to these days? It's something that I should keep my eyes open for on my local patch I guess. My leftfield suggestion would be Moustached Warbler, doing a Cetti's, a...

British and Irish expats in France

I was out on Friday, the highlight of a chilly day was a pair of breeding Cranes (shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!) on their usual site, although it was the first time I've seen them there since 2011 and just goes to show how elusive such large, loud and conspicuous birds can be! It's been snowing...

British and Irish expats in France

Please, don't embarass me by making me type in French! Swifts definitely on the way, loads there on Monday morning. With that weather, you need to keep an eye open for Snowfinch in that case.

British and Irish expats in France

I went back for the Pendulines on Monday morning and no sign, but, I did bump into the guy that I texted to let him know of their presence, he had 5 in the same place on Sunday evening, and, they all got up towards dusk and moved off, so, it seems that it was a migrating party. Still smart...

British and Irish expats in France

Bonjour everyone, I'll set the ball rolling on this one. Today I went out to Etang de Lachaussée in la meuse, department 55. This is one of my local patches that I frequently visit. Scores on the doors today: Indisputed highlight, 2, dare I say, a pair of Penduline Tits???? One was...
