Exploring Sydney - and further afield.

Great stuff Mike - I’ve really been enjoying your posts of the past few months in Sydney... the place names alone sound exotic, plus you’re getting lots of birds !

    Birding China

China requires a visa for most foreign visitors. Sometimes the visa applicant has to submit a detailed itinerary, with evidence of hotel bookings. This is just inconvenient for independent travellers. The authorities can keep the most popular sites - like Jiuzhaigou in Sichuan - filled with...

Dali, Yunnan Trip Report, July 2021

Looks like you had fun. I agree that the air seems thin at the top after the long cable car ride... well over 3,000m at the upper terminal !

    Bawangling National Forrest Park Hainan

I’m several years out-of-date on Hainan matters, but it used to be that Bawangling was home to the Hainan Gibbon. As one of the world’s rarest primates, the Reserve Management were sensitive about visitors. Perhaps things have changed - here’s a link about Jiangfengling, also in south Hainan...

    Birding Dalian + Hainan

Hi Aron, This is ten years old (the years fly by) but Mingfeng Gou (Phoenix Valley) had a boardwalk and decent habitat. I believe the accommodation there has become very run down http://johnjemi.hk/journey_tr/cn/hn09_11/one.html

Some swiftlets from Taiwan (September 2019)

Interesting thread ! FWIW, some Himalayan Swiftlet (?) shots from Hong Kong last October. https://johnjemi.blogspot.com/2018/11/end-of-october.html As John A said above, the only "firmly identified" swiftlet here is Himalayan

    Wanglang NNR, Sichuan May 2019

A link below to a blog post about a visit to Wanglang. https://johnjemi.blogspot.com/2019/06/wanglang-nnr-sichuan-25th-29th-may-2019.html The road from Ping Wu city northwards is very disturbed by construction of a grand highway (from Guangyuan) to Jiuzhaigou, further north.

Identification Question about Paradise-flycatcher in Guangxi

This is "Amur Paradise Flycatcher" - Japanese would be darker. Amur PF winters in SE Asia, so why not a passage migrant in Guangxi ?

    Night-heron in Guangxi, China

There are a few reports of Malayan Night Herons every spring/summer here in Hong Kong, Japanese Night Heron is a "once every twenty years" bird, and strictly a passage migrant. I don't know of any real habitat preference differences, lurking in the woods matches my experience of MNH, but both...

What's the best canon lens and camera for say BIF on a pelagic

Canon Pelagic BIFs Generally, I'd say that you would seldom use a 100-400mm zoom on a pelagic at less than the maximum400mm - so why not save weight and use a 400mm f 5.6 instead ? An "Albatross Encounter" at Kaikoura, New Zealand would be an obvious exception to usual pelagic conditions. The...

    Hainan island

Left off the lake road is the track to the Army quarters, as pointed out above. Beyond that, at MingFeng Gou "Phoenix Valley" there used to be a boardwalk through a good section of the forest, with a place to stay besides. Here's a link to our trip report...
