    Attitude!

Man, these little guys have some attitude! I had seen humming birds in my backyard a number of time so put up a feeder a couple of weeks ago. One hummer staked out my back yard as his turf, sat on a twig not far from the feeder and chased all other hummers away. He was there all the time, but...

Comment by 'Guest' in media 'Humming bird'

Yeah, and for such a tiny guy. He's a bit fluffed up in the photo. He sits shaded on the bottom branches of the tree and much of the illumination for the photo was reflected off a concrete patio below.

    Camera settings for digiscoping (cp990/995/4500)

All good info. Thanks! I'm new to digiscoping and have set up my Canon S400 on my 85 Diascope. It's worked pretty well but I am a bit dissapointed with the contrast and sharpness of the images. Compared to what I see looking through the scope, the digital images are washed out. I've been...

Zeiss Triple XXX Monocular 3x12B review

In the case of the adapter I had, the plastic adapter simply slipped off the end of the monocular. It was just a friction fit.

What are the best Compacts? Leica or Nikon?

Side by side, I chose the Nikon 8x20 over the Ultravids. Both had outstanding images but the Nikons were brighter and had more eye relief. Right now, they are my favorite to have at hand among 7x42 Lieca Trinovids and 8x32 Zeiss Victories.

Best fixed eyepiece for Diascope 65?

Definitely not waterproof. I thinks it's fairly unusual to do astronomical observing in the rain. Har! Of course, unlike zoom eyepieces, there is no mechanism, just a few lenses rentained in a barrel. As long as they don't get soaked or submerged, they fair OK. By the way, The Zeiss Vario is...

    Small, Compact Scope Wanted

Myself looking for a compact scope I've tried the Nikon 13-30x50 ED ($700)and Leupold 15-30x50 Golden Ring ($400). The Nikon produces very nice views with very little color but I didn't like its bulk, perceived lack of ruggedness, and non-waterproof eyepiece. The Leupold is rubber armored and...

Best fixed eyepiece for Diascope 65?

It might be worthwhile to point out that with Zeiss's astronomical eyepiece adapter, many high-quality wide-angle astro eyepieces can be used to good effect with the Diascopes. I've used Tele-Vue and Meade wide angle and super wide angle eyepieces with my 85. The longer fl eyepieces give...

Leica 8x32 Ultavid or Swaro 8x32 EL?

I've looked and compared all three at 8x32 on a number of occaisions, most recently comparing the Zeiss T FL to the Swaro EL (yesterday). I've written up some of the comparisons elsewhere in these forums. My preference is for the Zeiss. I think it has the best combination of optical...

    60x resolution problem

Maybe I'm overstating it. I've read elsewhere that about 10x per cm of diameter is adequate, so 85x for the Diascope 85. Lessee....I calculate the Airy disk to be ~8.2ee-6 rad (or 1.8 arcseconds) for an 85mm aperture. The average person can just resolve 5ee-4 rad (~100 arcseconds). So to...

    60x resolution problem

Bad Diascope! I have a Diascope 85 and it has outstanding resolution at 60 and even at 110 power (tested on stars and a resolution chart). You need to be able to see the Airy disc to do a legitimate star test so you need very steady skys and more than 60 power, even more than the 110x I...

    Diascope 85 & Astro eyepieces

Diascope 85 @ 107x I now have a Meade 5000 4.7mm eyepiece that I've been using with a Diascope 85 yielding 107x. At this power, brightness is certainly suffering but the views remain sharp and detailed across the field with little sign of chromatic abberation. The eyepiece has an expansive...

    help! tripod and head

Height, capacity, smooth panning, stability(damping), folded size, weight...are all considerations. I use a Manfroto 701RC2 head and 055V tripod with a straight Diascope 85. This is a full-sized sturdy setup and the head gives nice smooth action. The 055V is a tall tripod which is necessary...

Zeiss Triple XXX Monocular 3x12B review

Yes, agreed, a much less expensive eyepiece could be used for star testing. However, a high quality eyepiece can have the benefit of yielding very nice views if the scope and conditions are up to it. I'll admit that such high powers are of pretty limited use in birding, but they sure can...

Zeiss Triple XXX Monocular 3x12B review

For star testing you might consider getting a Zeiss Astronomy Eyepiece adapter and a good quality short focal length eyepiece which could provide a useful high power. There are a number to choose from in the $200 and up range, still cheaper than the Zeiss 3x monocular. The focal length of a...

Diascope 85 vs. Swaro 80HD quick comparo.

In astronomy circles, eyepieces are "parfocal" if you can switch between them and not have to refocus, or only focus a very small amount. Eyepieces can often be made parfocal by putting adjustable stops on them to set the depth the eyepiece goes into the holder. I find the Zeiss Vario to be...

Diascope 85 vs. Swaro 80HD quick comparo.

I had an opportunity to briefly compare a Ziess Diascope to 85 a Swarovski 80 HD. At low powers, the Swaro appeared to me to lean toward the blue end of the spectrum and appeared a bit brighter with a bit better contrast, perhaps due to the cooler coloration. By comparison, the Zeiss had a...

    Diascope 85 & Astro eyepieces

I tried a number of my astronomical eyepieces on my Diascope 85 after purchasing the Zeiss adapter, which comprises a sleeve that converts the 1.25” eyepiece to the inside diameter of the ocular end of the scope and a threaded ring the holds the adapter in place. The eyepiece is retained in the...

    fluid head lubrication.

I have found in the tripod heads I have serviced, that Triflow grease gives the smoothest movement by far, and I have tried many types of grease including variations of silicon grease. One serious dissadvantage of silicone grease is that it cannot be completely cleaned off optics if it ever...
