    Not UK, but a mature male Red-veined Darter was photographed near Haarlem, Netherlands a couple of days ago. One of the earliest records from north-west Europe.

    Red-breasted. Upturned bill, lack of white on the throat, scruffier crest. It's a smaller bird.

    I don't think it's a hybrid. Looks like a drake Mallard with a slightly abnormal head pattern to me.

    I don't see anything to suggest 2 is anything other than a Skylark, which are quite common at Rainham.

    Definitely. Quite variable as many of this genus is, but this is quite a distinctive form I think.

    Domestic Mallard x Muscovy Duck. Pink in bill, green hues & upturned rear end point to latter's parentage.

    I think that could well be Oak Tree Pug, but they are rather similar to Brindled.

    Yes I've also added Small White & Speckled Wood in recent days. Brimstone & Peacock the most abundant species with another 2 Comma yesterday.

    Believe it's changed now to Spinus spinus, though possibly not all authorities have made the change.

    Iberian Chiffchaff dilemma

    One has been claimed at a well watched London site the last 2 days, but only one observer has reported it. No idea whether there is one or not, but it seems odd nobody else has connected with it at such a well birded site.

    Field Studies Council do a series of laminated sheets on lichens of different habitats which look quite good for an elementary introduction.

    You'll certainly need a microscope & chemistry set if you plan to do lichens seriously.
