Beginner looking for advise (Canon 7d mkII + Tamron 100-400 Di VC USD)

That new 100-500mm lens of yours will struggle in low light. We had a couple on our recent Qld photography workshop who had exactly that problem with their R5 bodies having a lot of issues focusing in dim lit forests. However, it's still a great lens to start with until you work out whether...

    Photography beginner - flying birds

I recently wrote a blog post about BIF, if you are interested, read it here. It's not exhaustive, but will give you some good pointers. Enjoy the journey! Blog post

    Good news for OM/Olympus owners

My camera (OM-1) developed sticky dials front and rear after returning form New Zealand late March this year. I sent it off to Olympus and luckily for us their office and repair center is 4km from home, and they literally replaced the entire top assembly. I guess it comes as an entire component...

    New OM-1

Maybe a bit late to the posts, but my wife and I bought OM-1 bodies last November and have been using them extensively, mostly with birds. All I can say is, that it's simply an amazing tool for bird photography. While I have read mixed reviews of the bird detection and tracking, our standard...

Canon EOS1DX MkIII rumours, speculation, field test escapees, teasers & announcements

S H I T Period. But you can keep cleaning sensors. It's not a huge issue for my bird or aviation photography, but for macro or any other where I step down to say f/11 or more the spots become VERY visible. No matter how many times I clean both 1Dx2 sensors in our arsenal, the issue remains...

Canon EOS1DX MkIII rumours, speculation, field test escapees, teasers & announcements

Agreed, the camera (and Nikon's D5) are unbeatable for action photography. The oil is a real pain in the rear. My better half and I have those bodies and cannot clean the sensors enough. Very poor design Canon!

    Sigma 500mm f/4 Sport video

Hi guys I was asked by the local distributor of Sigma gear to talk to them about my thoughts on this lens. If you are interested to view, the video is here. Happy photography to you all!

    Entry level DSLR

Then don't make these comments if you don't know Canon at all. It does not help an uninformed person. :eek!::eek!: In the right hands either system will work perfectly well, especially when you get to pro-level camera bodies eg. Nikon D5 or the Canon EOS 1Dx MkII. :t:

    New Sigma 60-600 coming

I'll be getting one of these new zooms from the Sydney distributor soon enough to test in the field. 600mm f/6.3 is fine in reasonable light, but not perfect and honestly, I only remember needing a short lens when I was photographing a sea eagle from a boat as it came in so close to take a...

Autofocus fail for distant subjects. 7D2+5D3

Your biggest issue is distance and not knowing how your cameras and their AF systems work! 100m is too far for good focus acquisition generally (especially with small subjects) and to be able to achieve decent image quality overall. Try using a ghillie suit to be able to get closer to raptors or...

Canon EF 600mm f/4 DO BR lens

I can't see how a company like Canon would invest in upgrading their lenses to make their performance worse than the model they are replacing. An MTF chart is just a guide for me, and nothing beats using gear in the real world rather than a controlled test situation.

Canon EF 600mm f/4 DO BR lens

It helps having the hard case when the lens is resold to a new owner. I never used mine, but sent it along. They are bloody expensive as well.

    Canon 500mm mk1 f4 focus hunt

That's a bummer if Canon no longer service the lens. It is an incredible piece of glass.

Request of information about the western treatment plant in Melbourne

Thanks. :t: Unfortunately, way too many errors are made in the identification of raptors. A classic example I have from several years ago was when a bird club member of Illawarra birders sent me a photo of a dark brown raptor they photographed near Kiama or so and it was identified by many in...

Request of information about the western treatment plant in Melbourne

Nice write-up, thanks for making the effort. I am from Sydney and have only been around the edges of the WTP. But one day.... Incidentally, your aerial battle photo is of a Swamp Harrier, not Spotted Harrier. Note the white rump, which no other raptor has in Oz and is the easiest ID feature if...

    Capetown birding end of August

We spent three weeks in SA in June/July. We used Uber in Joburg while we had our rental car waxed and buffed, however, in most instances we had rental cars for obvious reasons. Strandfontein STP is fantastic! I would definitely use a car there, it is quite a large site. We are photographers...

    Juvenile Bald Eagle

As mentioned, the crop is too tight. The wings are also in a very unappealing position. In addition, you are looking up at the bird and the face is covered by shadow. Generally, it's best to try and shoot them closer to eye level, have nicer light on the face (more eye contact is going to...

    Struggling with focus/sharpness

What I can see in your EXIF data are two things: 1) You have surrounding AF points enabled. I would turn these off completely where this type of high-precision focusing is needed with smaller subjects. While you may have the center point selected, the AF system may apply another point if there...

    New Sigma 150/600

Thanks. I find it plenty fast for aircraft at least with my camera bodies. I suspect it will be relatively fast still for birds. I would not even consider a TC for this particular lens. I, however, used an EF 1.4x II with the EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens, but the Sigma 150-600mm...

    New Sigma 150/600

How do you find this outfit? Have you taken it out? I have bought the 150-600 C for my fiancee and while I have not yet photographed birds (or other wildlife with it) yet, I have extensively tested at a couple of recent airshows and found the lens excellent!!! I have both 1DMkIV and 1DxMkII...
