    Hi Gillian, It's an Alder Flycatcher - not the song, but a call. In addition to the classic "free-beer!" song, Alders make this "squealy" whistle and also a short "pip!" or "kep!". It's nice to have an an empid thread by sound! -Neil G.

    Hi Craig, Your bird is an Eastern Kingbird. Note the sharp black and white contrast between the upperparts and underparts, heavy, hooked bill, and especially the white tip of the tail. cheers, Neil G.

    sparrows in northern michigan

    Hi bGebz, Your first bird appears to be a Grasshopper Sparrow. Overall very buffy, with head stripes and plain underparts. The flat head and short tail are also characteristic of this species. The second bird is a Song Sparrow - long tail, rich brown overall, messy streaking... cheers Neil G.

    We have a winner! Neil78! Bird #5 is indeed a "Nelson's" Gull. It sure does look a lot like a Glaucous Gull, but the bill is rather narrow, and the wingtips were dark brownish. I considered a very bleached Herring Gull, or a hybrid Glaucous-winged x Herring, but "Nelson's" seems to be the best...

    Yes, those are indeed Royal Terns. Elegants are extremely rare in southern California in the winter - they won't return until March. However, in spring/summer, Elegants greatly outnumber Royals - there's an enormous breeding colony at Bolsa Chica in Huntington Beach. Neil G.
