Leupold Gold Ring HD 8x32 versus SV 8x32

Due to off-on heavy down pours yesterday, my L 8x32 HD were taken off the self for some field time. I forget how excellent they are. Something seldom mentioned. about them is the close focus, which for my eyes is about 4.5 feet. BTW When first marketed they were asking about $1400 for them. Not...

Binoculars as microscope - Penta Papilio 6.5x21 vs Minox BF 10x42

Have had one for a few years, love it. But i seldom use it in macro mode due the necessity of adding/subtracting macro lenses... However, it lives in my briefcase of shoulder bag. Many uses.

Binoculars as microscope - Penta Papilio 6.5x21 vs Minox BF 10x42

Not with the Papilio, nor with with the Vortex Viper 8x32 HD, which has a very nice close focus. Must not be an eyeglass wearer ;)

Binoculars as microscope - Penta Papilio 6.5x21 vs Minox BF 10x42

I think the FOV on my 8.5x Papilio is 6 degrees, and the FOV on the Orion is like 5.8-5.9 degrees. Eye relief on the Orion is listed i think, as 17mm, and it seems better to me than the Papilio.

Binoculars as microscope - Penta Papilio 6.5x21 vs Minox BF 10x42

i have had for a numbe of years, the Orion 10x42 monocular with 20" close focus. It also has a tripod hole, and mine came with a neck lanyard the screwed into that hole. Actually does not get alot of use, but it lives in my car glove box, for the quick pull-over-look thing. For its price it is...

Papillo 6.5X or 8.5X for birding.?

I had been using the original Papilio 8.5x as a supplemental instrument, but would not as a rule, use it for anything not for close focusing. This was not due to the magnification (which was great at close-focus, since as other in the past on BF have pointed out, on the Papilio the stated...

    new Papilio II

I do astronomy through microscopy, with the big time lump at the binocular scale. I got the version 2 last week and i agree. With version 1 it was always a much used supplement to the primary "real" binocular i would carry. Now; there will be times when i will go out with just the Papilio 2. I...

Does anyone use Nikon's SE 12x50 for birding?

I have and use all 3 of the SE line. I use my 12x for astronomy, at which it may be unsurpassed in the 50mm size, in no small measure due to the flat field it shares with its smaller kin. I have found (for my eyes, our individual eye characteristics are not given enough their due), in day time...

Edge to edge sharpness - a misleading criterion?

Actually no. It is only in focus on the point you are concentrating on. It does scan very fast and constantly when your eyes are open though, and your brain knits a coherent view. I think a flat fov or sharp edge to edge is very important in a binoculat that will also be used in astronomy. I...

Nikon 8x32 SE review - vs. Habicht and Swarovision

Re CA and the 12x SE. I use them for astronomy. When i first got them a few years back, i was surprised at the CA during the day. I found it diasappeared when i got focus set exactly. I do prefer my 8x and 10x SE for the day time, and find the 10x to be an excellent dual use glass.

    questions for 100mm users

i have some questions for folks who currently use, or did in the past, a 100mm prismatic spotting scope. which one? which eyepieces? your comments on its performance? did you ever use it for astronomy, and if so, how was its performance? If you no longer use it, why not? thanks

Nikon 8x32 SE review - vs. Habicht and Swarovision

Good review. I recently had to get a new eyeglass prescription, which resulted in excessive ER/eye placement problems with my 8x SE. I folded the upper part of the eyecup down until it almost touches the edge of the eye lense. Worked like a charm, and similar to your solution. So far, my fold...

    Vintage and Classic Binoculars

a few weeks ago i picked up a pair at a flea market, that have turned out to be rather good and are now among my "users". My daily users include the 8x32 Nikon SE. Binolux fully coated feather weight 7x35 wide angle 11 degree 578 ft. at 1000 yards. Japan 2556 9857 with the inspection...

    Vortex Viper 10x50 HD

Hi, I am familar with a couple Viper HD models. I am searching for information from someone who has actually used, or tried, the Vortex Viper HD 10x50 HD. In particular, their optical quality, exspecially CA control. Not interested in suggestions of alternatives.

Vortex viper HD 8x32 or Nikon SE 8X32

i have both. i use bino, loupes, etc to look at a range of living things. So, the close focus is important to me. How i use them. My 8x se is my primary reliance for daytime use, spring through fall, unless in torrential rain situation. i also carry something else for close ups, (8x papilios and...

    Closest thing to an Alpha.....

Performance is not the definitive element. Rather, the sole consistent factor, is cost. It seems the perception of binoculars complies with Veblen's theories in Theory of the Leisure Class. That is not to say they do not have excellent build quality and optics.

    Nikon SE 505 v 550 - The girlfriend test.

All eyes are slightly to significantly different, in both the structure and in the wiring/wetware. Add to that, that everytime we remember something, that memory is altered by the current mood/need/environment/health state/circumstance etc etc that you are in at the time you remember. The next...
