Hawthorn Fly - Bibio marci ?

Spine on front tibia means it's definitely Bibio. Looks good for marci.

    What was your most embarrasing....''string''

Once called a heron as a hen harrier on the Somerset Levels. Then about an hour later, still smarting from my mistake, called a hen harrier as a heron. Some days it feels like you should just pack up & go home.

Are these Alder Beetles? NE Scotland

Looks like they might be. You may want to check with these guys for more up to date info.

    Snail Question

I think a couple of garden snails is a much better idea than the African Land Snails. Some soil in the bottom of the tank, a couple of slates to hide under and (important) a lid should be all you need. Lettuce & other kitchen scraps may suffice, they do like chicken feed as well. Enjoy!

Is it not a Sminthuridae - globular springtail?

    What are these?

They are weevils, can't tell you any more than that I'm afraid.

Some ladybirds I'm trying to ID...

Helen Roy's new book on ladybirds is pretty good: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ladybirds-Coccinellidae-Britain-Ireland-Helen/dp/1906698201

    Climate Change Denial

...and in other news Hitler was a vegetarian & Anders Breivik quoted Steve McIntyre in his 'manifesto'. If anyone was wondering what ad hominum meant then the Heartland Institute poster is a perfect encapsulation of its definition. Meanwhile, more blog science.

Amazon under renewed threat from Big Agri-Business

Agreed, and also a scenario likely replicated with the corn-oil in the Amazon & elsewhere. In both cases there is a bait-and-switch, getting people to rail against (eg) the "biofuel scam" whilst missing the true target.

Amazon under renewed threat from Big Agri-Business

Aren't most palm oil plantations set up for producing 'vegetable oil' for food production rather than for biofuel?

    Help stop Green Waste

Other than the assertion of the author of the petition is there any evidence that farmers are "having their land contaminated with plastic, aluminium, glass and all kinds of other products, containing chemicals and substances"? I'm guessing that if it was the case it would already be...

    Flying insect- Cork, Ireland

Most likely Bibio marci, other species are possible but aren't usually seen in such large numbers (Dilophus febrilis being the exception but that species is much smaller). The early date is a feature of 2012 entomology it appears, with butterflies, moths & aphids (among other groups) all with...

Not a book but UK Moths is pretty indispensable.

    Mystery Butterfly

I've heard reports of small blue out already & there's plenty of early moth records knocking about this year too. Can't rule anything out by date at the moment I'm afraid... Bugalert has a March 26 record of Small Copper from Co. Durham

    Climate Change Denial

Believe me, I've been following the climate science debate on the internet since far earlier than the publication of Montford's book, and having seen many people come out shouting the odds about it without understanding the issues behind it I'm fully aware of what it does & doesn't say. I've...

    Climate Change Denial

Two of my papers - just as a taster of my work, one on carabids, and one on aphids, I hope this goes some way to clarify what I know about the use of statistics. Mann used sub-optimal PCA in his earlier paper (note sub-optimal does NOT equal wrong), later work using better Principle Components...

The government has finally seen through the wind-farm scam – but why did it take them

That's a bit rich considering you've so far been unable to articulate what you think is wrong with Mann's approach or for that manner any of the rebuttals to your favourite sources, preferring instead to urge people to read the conspiratorial ramblings of an economist and the blog pages of a...

    Climate Change Denial

The above quote is an encapsulation of the whole genesis of this thread. Let's look at that first sentence phrase by phrase: "CO2 levels still rising" - correct. "no warming for fifteen years" - incorrect (nb: the selection of 15 years is a common one among certain "commentators" as this...

    Climate Change Denial

The GWPF? Really? Have you actually read the whole report etudiant? I've had a skim & the assumptions behind the numbers seem skewed. I'm also wary of a 40+ page report that contains only six references - three reports, two white papers and a speech. Compare with this paper from last year...

The government has finally seen through the wind-farm scam – but why did it take them

Interestingly the above article also announces the inauguration of the "The Matt Ridley Prize for Environmental Heresy". "We invite pieces ... to gore one of the sacred cows of the environmentalist movement" ...classy.

    Climate Change Denial

I'm not sure one exists but this gives some idea. As to the history, you'll probably have to read this. A picture may paint a thousand words, but sometimes the words are needed to capture the complexity. Politics =/= Science. Don't let the one confuse your understanding of the other. After...

    Climate Change Denial

Sorry to resurrect this but I just stumbled across this graph and remembered MJB's post. I have no idea of the provenance but after a quick check it seems genuine. ...and having looked at it again I realise it doesn't actually answer the ice thickness question, d'oh.
