  1. Little Blue Heron juvenile

    Little Blue Heron juvenile

Looks like he has a bit of the gray/blue color in wingtips. The giant water lily pads allow the bird to walk on water.
  2. Yellow-breasted Chat

    Yellow-breasted Chat

This was a fairly hard bird to photograph in my backyard. He stayed mostly in deep shade with lots of brush so I had to use manual focus. He would stay still and out of sight for long periods, long enough that each time I thought he was gone completely, and then a flash of yellow, then still...
  3. Mississippi Kite

    Mississippi Kite

Lost balance while munching on a locust.
  4. Mississippi Kite - eating in a tree

Mississippi Kite - eating in a tree

This bird was eating a locust at the tip of a pine tree in our yard. He lost his balance for a few seconds and I got nice wing view. Too bad it was so overcast today (and I don't know the best settings for overcast).
  5. Mississippi Kite - eating on the wing

Mississippi Kite - eating on the wing

I guess for them, eating on the wing is like us chewing gum and walking at the same time, but I still think it's impressive.

    Houston TX Oriole ID please

I am not familiar with Orioles at all, and this one we saw this am doesn't match anything in my book. The color was generally yellow, but seemed to have a slightly orange tint to the yellow. On ebird, the only orioles that have been seen in Houston (Harris county) are Baltimore, Bullocks and...
  7. Dirty Birdie

    Dirty Birdie

The jays tend to grab a piece of food then take it up into a tree, so I didn't have many pics of them. The other day I decided to move the bird bath into a sunny spot away, and look who came to visit!
  8. Bronzed Cowbird

    Bronzed Cowbird

Cool red eye on the bronzed cowbird.

    Nutmeg Mannikin

Oh the excitement of seeing a new bird in the backyard! Oh the panic trying to get pics! I got lucky that even one was in focus.
  11. Pale Collared Dove

    Pale Collared Dove

This pale or 'blond' Collared Dove was really almost white. This shot is through the window, but is the best one I have with the regular shaded dove in there for comparison. I don't know if this one is just a naturally pale wild or escapee domesticTurtle Dove, or what. Very striking bird -...
  12. Large Dragonfly Green Darner

    Large Dragonfly Green Darner

We measured this dragon fly to be 2.5 inches. It was huge. I believe this is female Green Darner. We call them Mosquito Hawks here in Texas.

Rare to be this far east.

Comment by 'debntexas' in media 'Ruby-Throated Hummingbird'

This was 1/640. It was very overcast, so that was as fast as I felt I could go. Well, I probably could have changed the ISO, but my camera tends to have lots of noise, so I usually don't move it off 80. I also used a flash, which created a shadow on the body from the wing. Next time I will...

    Ruby-Throated Hummingbird

This is one of the first we've had this year.

Can you ID Red Shoulder Hawk by screech alone? Texas

Excellent Thanks everyone. I have also found an article in the local paper indicating that Feb is courtship time for these Hawks, and they are very vocal while trying to impress a mate.

    Something about this pic?

Is it just me, or is there something aesthically pleasing about this pic? Is it the diagonal angles, and the different things out of focus, and then BLAM, there is the bird facing the sun, in sharp focus (as sharp as I ever get). I took the pic thinking it would be another junk photo of a...

Can you ID Red Shoulder Hawk by screech alone? Texas

I've been hearing this screeching from our suburban back yard, sounding almost like a sea gull but not. Today, I finally saw who was making the noise. A pair of hawks doing smallish circles, then sort of fake diving, one following the other - I say fake because I didn't get the sense they were...

First Rufous for the 06-07 season - SE Texas

I guess Rufous... I was able to get some nice close ups of this hummer that we are guessing is a Rufous. This is the first winter hummer we've had, and also the first non Ruby Throat. So exciting! Hope these pics work

Rufous or Allen's or Black-Chinned Hummingbird

What a great model! Waited so patiently as I got close and focused and took 200 photos. I believe it is juvenile due to downy-looking feathers.

    FZ30...birds no....selling...yes !

Newbie to the forum...glad to see that I am not a complete idiot with the manual focus on this camera. I kept thinking I should be able to manually focus BETTER or to a finer degree than autofocus, but my manual focused shots seem worse 80% of the time. Now I think I will try a new...
