    Acrylic glaze technique?

I'm working on an acrylic painting on textured board, that will require thin glazes to achieve an effect of clear stream water. I believe one of the tricks is to flat out any texture in the board you are working on, but I never seem to be able to achieve this completely. So, when I tried this...

    First go with Samsung NV3/Opticron

I finally took the plunge into digiscoping and received my Samsung NV3 and Opticron clam adaptor yesterday. Really easy to set up on my ES80GA/ED, and I'm quite pleased with my initial results even though it's a very overcast and rainy day and I was shooting through glass. Des.

Las Vegas in June any birds?

Hi, my employer is sending me to a conference in Las Vegas in June. I probably won't have much spare time and definitely will not have personal transport. Am I likely to see anything of interest (bird wise!!) locally? Many thanks, Des.

Oliva Prize trip report 8th – 11th April

You may remember back in November, Jules Sykes ran a competition to guess the 199th and 200th species he would see on his local patch in Oliva in the east of Spain. I was lucky enough to win courtesy of a Common Crane and a Hawfinch, plus some generous interpretation of his own rules by Jules (I...

Bustard reintroduction threat to Russian population

I picked up on this story from another forum and thought it would be of interest here:- http://www.arts.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/11/14/nbust14.xml&sSheet=/news/2005/11/14/ixhome.html My own thought is that no reintroduction scheme can be allowed to adversely affect one of...

Gulls of Europe, Asia & N.A.

Hi, has anybody ordered Gulls of Europe, Asia & North America from the WHSmith website? The website lists it as "paperback", is that true or is it the hardback version? Also, is this the revised edition or the corrected version? It seems like a great price at £31-50 +P&P! Thanks, Des.

    Bempton this weekend

Hi, I'm heading up to Yorkshire this weekend, spending Saturday at Bempton and possibly Flamborough. Sunday I'm undecided. Possibly Spurn or Blacktoft Sands (which is roughly on the way home). I'm totally unfamiliar with any of these areas so any local knowledge of which would be the better...

    Good news for scope buyers?

In the UK budget today, Gordon Brown has announced a raise in the threshold for tax on goods bought whilst abroad. Tourists who go on shopping sprees abroad can now bring back goods to the value of £1,000 without having to pay extra duty on them, up from just £145. Good news if you're planning...

    Falcon feeding behaviour

Hi, on a recent trip to Southern Spain I stopped the car to watch a group of 6 falcons circling some distance away. It was after a burst of heavy rain and the sun was now making the air quite humid. As they came a bit closer I could clearly see they were taking insects in flight and passing them...

Lets hear it for the humble House Sparrow!

Just filled up the feeders during a brief break in the continual rain we've had today (and all week) and was soon mobbed by a squabbling flock of House Sparrows. They seem to have done really well this year. From seeing perhaps a dozen at a time when we moved in a couple of years ago, the count...

    Magpie Nesting

I posted in another thread early this year (3rd Jan) about early nest building by magpies. For over two months the pair have continued to bring twigs back to the same spot but have never succeeded in getting more than three or four together before the whole lot collapses. This morning however...
