Hi, Sorry to about your bear problems. I live in New Hampshire and have had bears destroy my feeding station TWICE! The only way I have found to stop them is to bring my feeders in at night. I look forward to December when they go to sleep. John

Hi Johnny, I want to second what Spica said about using red ribbons. They have always done the trick for me. I see where you using many other feeders and attracting a lot of birds, congrats. I didn't see if you mentioned how close the hummingbird feeder was to the other feeders. I keep my...

    Robin's Nest

Robins often raise two broods in a season. I had a pair of titmice build a nest and raise a brood under my porch. About a week after the young birds left the nest I watched the pair dismantle their nest and build a new one about 20feet away for a second brood. John

Have you seen a Junco? Where are they?

I had also noticed a decline in the numbers of juncos in my yard. I live in central New Hampshire. We have had snow on the ground since the end of November. It has snowed so often the birdseed that is normally available under my feeders has been covered in snow. I added a ground feeder a...

    Seed falling out of feeders

Hi, You could try hanging a tray feeder from the bottom of the tube feeders to catch the seed. I have done this in the past and it works very well. John

How and where to find owls?

Searching for owls is a lot of fun. It is a little easier in the winter than other times of the year. You are sure to hear them before you see them. Go out a couple of hours before sundown. Marshes, streams and forest edges are great places to find them. If you live in an area with old...

odd, I have no cardinals, you?

I live in central New Hampshire. In the winter I get as many as 6 cardinals at my feeders. They usually come by early in the morning and the late afternoon. In the spring only one pair visits to visit at a time. Northern Cardinals migrate short distances and may have moved out of your...

    Feeder location advice needed

Hi, I had the same experience a few months ago when I relocated my feeding station. It took several weeks for the birds to accept it. I kept the feeders about half full and made sure the seed was fresh at all times. I also tossed some seed on the ground to attract ground feeders. First only...

    nest boxes in the winter

Hi, I always clean out my nest boxes. Most birds prefer building a new nest each year. I think it is part of their bonding together as a pair. I would leave the unused nest boxes in place, unless you think they are too close to the other nest boxes. John

    Wasp Nest In Bird Box??

Hi, It looks like a paper wasp nest. You should remove it, carefully, as it may still be in use. Try to do it in the coolest part of the day, which is when wasps are the least active. I use dryer sheets in my nest boxes to deter wasps. They have worked well over the years. The birds don't...

    In search of the Waxwing

Hi, I love the look of Cedar Waxwings, too. I was lucky to see several of them in a very unlikely place. I was at the post office when I noticed several birds flying under the overhang of the outdoor walkway. I was surprised to see that they were Cedar Waxwings. I was even more surprised...

    Hummingbirds and Wasps

Hi, I know it is a little scary but I would remove the nest as well. If the yellow jackets are attracted to the nectar, try using a dish feeder. Their tongues are not long enough to reach the food. If there is no food for them maybe they will move on to another food source. John

    Nuthatches

Hi, I have attracted these beauties with suet. It seems to work best when hung on a tree trunk. They are tree clingers and will feed while walking up and down a tree trunk. John

Hi, Great picture and beautiful bird. We have had a family at the feeders for about a week now. The male will arrive first. About 10 minutes or so later the female and one youngster will arrive. They forage on the gound. I try to toss out a few handfulls of saflower seed before they...

    Interesting feeder ideas

Hello, If you want to make a suet feeder for little or no cost, try this. Take a small (3 to 4 inch diameter) tree or branch that has fallen and drill 5 or 6, 1 1/2" dia holes on various sides, about 2'" deep. Drill a hole in the top and screw in an eye-screw. Fill the holes with the suet...

    ruby throated hummingbird feeding tips?

Hi, It is not necessary to purchase commercially produced nectars that have vitamins and minerals added to them. Hummers get all the vitamins and minerals that they need from insects and natural nectar. A simple sugar solution is adequate to supplement their dietary needs. 1 part sugar 4...

How close together to put nesting boxes

Hi, You should try to allow 1/4 –acre between most bird houses. Since most birds are territorial, an average sized yard will probably only hold one nesting pair of a specific species. Similar to nest-box height, territory size varies from species to species. While nuthatches and chickadees need...

    hummer question

Hi Stanton, The following are the basics of a good hummingbird garden: Use trees and shrubs to supplement the hummingbird flowers in your garden. The hummers will benefit from the shade, perching spots and nesting sites more than the trees and shrubs shorter blooming cycle. Perennials make...
