Have You Seen Any of These Mammals?

That is a rather remarkable record of Spectacled Porpoise. As I remember the vast majority of catalogued records are of specimens collected on the tidal flats of Tierra del Fuego by Nathalie Goodall. The main paper on Spectacled sightings lists almost exclusively single animals. It and...

Have You Seen Any of These Mammals?

I am curious if you have photos of the Spectacled from Sth Orkney. My understanding is that this would be the first and only record from the Orkneys and likely the most southern ever.

    Pelagics on cruise ships

Hey Alan Enjoy the islands, Hopefully I finally get to Steeple Jason this year. Likley visiting West Point. Hope Roddy is well. I will enjoy Stanley, shopping at the West, Curry (and cats) at the Victory, and searching for our friend the earwig. Michael

Spoke to the author, the publication date was set by the publisher with no input from the author. No word on the expected date.

Alan see you on Nov. 11 if you are working.

    Pelagics on cruise ships

Your main loss will be the lack of landings and the speed of the large ship. All the ships that offer traditional Antarctic cruise/land trips boot it across the Drake Passage to maximize time in Antarctica and minimize the chance of encountering a storm. It is pretty rare to stop and whale...

    Some birds in Honduras

Lancetilla is one of the great birding spots in Central AMerica but I get the impression it receives virtually no visitors. Pico Bonito is great for the upscale traveller and Copan is great if you like it hot and dry.

Visiting Yosemite, Death Valley, Grand Canyon

I would certainly recommend more than a day at Yosemite. Some pretty cool birds are common but need searching of the correct habitat. Recent burn areas should be really good for black-back woodpeckers. In the fields behind the gas station at Toulmene Meadows is a great spot for BReat Grey Owl...

Product reviews in the birding press?

Do you not think that his is common? Revenues are generated by ads and magazines do not want to upset the advertiser. In a similar vein I find that many book reviews are not honest, in fact they are often glowing when an ad for the book is near by. What about the magazine that writes articles...

    HONDURAN EMERALD Amazilia luciae

As I remember, Howell and Webb mention the type speciment being (incorrectly) labelled as being collected in Santa Barbara. Thye eventually found it a few kms to the west of Olanchito (where the pipe organ canctus begin). Maybe the type specimen was correctly labelled!!!

    Best bird guides by region...Asia

What about a guide for the country of Georgia. I assume the birds of Central Asia (when it is published) will be a good choice, but until then?

    Field guide for Nearctic/Greenland

"I will be offshore Western Greenland, quite far north." Your prospects for seabirds is rather limited; some shorebirds, murres, fulmars, and a few others. IF you are north of Quannaq and get into the strait between Greenland and Canada there will be sea ice and polar bears.

    Best bird guides by region...Asia

Funny I thought I knew that the Arabian Peninsula is part of Asia, if by convention only. Presumably the Suez canal made the decision easier.

    Argentina (July-October 2012)

Do not expect anything cheap in Argentina. I am shocked at the inflation rate and how much things cost. I have found prices for many things (inc. food) to be higher than in Canada.

Suggestions for a short city trip

Buenos Aires is getting more dangerous by the day. A French Tourist was murdered in the Retiro (park) area for his camera. I would seriously consider taking a local with you if you intend on photography. Costenera Sur is the easiest place for a day trip. Perhaps contact Aves Argentina and...

    Patagonia bird book, any opinions?

Skip both books. If you are looking for a guide book while birding then get the Birds of Chile by Jaramillo, Burke and Beadle. The handbook is not a field guide but rather more of an information guide.

A plea for a common sequence of birds in all future bird field guides

I suppose that if you are having difficulty finding birds in your new field guide it may be because the guide is new to you and/or you are not famaliar with the birds themselves. A few days of study and I am willing to bet you will have the sequence down and be better prepared should you take...

    Declaration of Rights for Whales

Do whales have rights? Are they intinsic or are they conferred by humans? Some "answers" lie in the writing of Holmes Rolston (3) (amongst others) and in a book entitled Toward a Sustainable Whaling Regime.

    New Naturalist series

I do not have these books but I do have some others. Every NN I have seen is well done, though some info may be out of date. The series is an amazing accomplishment and is very worthwhile reading.
