    Canon RF 200-800mm IS USM

I use the R7 in preference to a 1.4tc on the 100-500 Colin. I’m impressed with the IQ on the R7 but ISO much better on the R5 but having said that you can zoom back to obtain a wider aperture and still have the same reach as the R5 when you stick the R7 on the 100-500. Undecided on the AF of the...

    Canon RF 200-800mm IS USM

If I were to buy the 200-800 it would be to replace the 1.4TC on the 100-500 which would not only give me more light but no loss of reach at the short end. I actually bought the R7 as I needed a back-up camera for my R5 which is still my go to body but instead of using a TC I use the R7 now...

    Canon RF 200-800mm IS USM

Re our wind up merchant contributor, I have owned several big white F4 EF telephoto lenses, was never remotely interested in the 800mm f5.6 , sold my 600 but retained the 500mm f4 in preference when I had both at once. I still have the 500 (they were both Mk2 versions) but it rarely gets used...

    Canon RF 200-800mm IS USM

Slightly debatable IMO, the only one to compete is the Sigma 300-800 f5.6. Canon wins on minimum focus distance by 5.2m, and less weight ( you need a wheel barrow for the Sigma at 5880gms) and price when new but constant f5.6 is a major plus as well as internal zoom and sharp images make Sigma a...

    Timelapse camera recommendations?

Although the video I posted states you can take 299 shots I can't see any way of extending it beyond 99 so that might be an issue , there again one every 7 minutes might suffice your needs. The first shot is wide open, the second using the optical zoom. You can cover a fairly wide area.

    Timelapse camera recommendations?

You would be taking only 299 shots which is one every 2.4 minutes. That shouldn't present a problem, they hold the battery power very well. They are waterproof too so no need to worry about the weather and you can even time lapse under water ! Roughly how big an area do you want to cover? I'll...

    Timelapse camera recommendations?

It might help if we knew what you intend to photograph and why. If it's to check out what creatures visit over a period of time then a trail camera is probably the best way to go. If it's to record the tide coming in and out or a flower opening then you need something different, a camera with a...

    Timelapse camera recommendations?

I have an 8 year old Olympus TG-4 which you can pick up for under £300 and it has an incredible array of features for the money including time lapse ( interval shooting). There's one on eBay for £50. The TG-6 can be bought for £300 but I don't have the specs on that to compare. The TG-4 will...

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

I'm pleased that at last I have found some people acknowledging that the setting works well ! I have been advocating it in reply to queries on several web sites ever since I started using it back in 2020 but never had a positive response before!!

    Grey imports.

Let's clear up a couple of mistaken beliefs about grey imports, at least here in the UK. Purchased from a UK dealer you get a 2 year Canon warranty but depending on who the grey importer is you can get a 3 year warranty that is funded by the dealer. A common misconception is that should...

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

You can set up your custom functions 1-3 for different scenarios too. Just hitting the Mf-n button scrolls through each one and back to your main setting. Unlike most people I have my shutter button set to focus and to take shots. I use a single centre point which allows me to focus in the area...

Birding at Kruger camps, South Africa

Common sense is the by word Andy, you can't account for stupidity although on the roads many are killed by their own stupidity whilst others are indeed innocent victims as a result. I must admit I am not happy in the presence of Elephants and I have seen enough to last me a lifetime. You can...

Birding at Kruger camps, South Africa

That was 9 years ago Andy.No doubt it would have left a lasting impression but I still maintain that you are very safe in KNP as long as you use common sense. Google the possibilities and you will find very few incidences of fatal attacks, particularly on tourists. I can think of one who was...

Birding at Kruger camps, South Africa

If you want to go to extremes you are not safe in your car, or even your chalet in a camp for that matter. We had a snake in our chalet on one occasion which scared my wife to a near heart attack when she lifted a bag and it was underneath it! It turned out to be harmless but might not have...

Birding at Kruger camps, South Africa

The drive from J'berg to Malelane is a decent road and there is a good Spar to stock up at if you intend self catering. Stop at Milly's which is a good service station and was the only place I have seen Pied Starling on my trips to KNP. Malelane to Berg-en-Dal camp is a fairly short drive and...

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

If Canon can't sort it in 4 attempts I would expect the insurance company to cough up for a new one providing you were covered of course.

I'm curious Andy...why would you have three 100-400 MK2 lenses?

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

Excellent images Mike. I'm currently struggling in deeply shaded woodland, thick undergrowth and flitting birdlife. By the time the camera wakes up I have the perfect shot of a branch or alternatively the camera refuses to focus on the subject. Very frustrating ! Prior to that I have been doing...

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

Agree entirely on the AF issues, not had a problem at all with water ingress but as a wearer of spectacles I have in the past always worn out the cushions on the eye piece of other camera bodies I have owned. The R5 is a solid piece of rubber but if it wears it will be expensive to replace, it...

Canon R3 & Canon 800MM F/5.6 RF Lens Combo anyone yet..?

I have owned four 1D's including the 1DX2 but have no desire to add the R3 to my bag as it would not be a step up from the R5 for my own usage. I have also owned the Mk1&2 500 and 600mm EF versions but never had any inclination to buy the EF800 for many reasons including minimum focus distance...
