    Bannerman’s Shearwater and Matsudaira’s Storm-Petrel

I have added to the gallery photos of these two species. Should be some more new opus species to come as I work through photos from a trip from New Zealand to Japan by sea.

Pallid or Common Swift - Whitburn, Co Durham, 5th Nov 2023

A selection of my photos of the Swift sp that was around Whitburn yesterday. The majority of the time it looked very dark, just occasionally did it appear browner. I am leaning slightly towards Common, but am far from certain.

    Maroon-belted Chat-Tyrant

The photo in the Maroon-belted Chat-Tyrant species account is actually a Rufous-breasted Chat-Tyrant. I have attached a picture of a Maroon-belted. Also I have recently uploaded a few photos of species that are missing from Opus and will upload a few more soon.

    2 Blue Tit nests

I put up this box hoping for Tree Sparrows, but they have never shown any interest in it. Blue Tits however are occupying the centre and right holes, when the nests were being built I watched an individual bird going into both holes with sheep’s wool that I had put out for them. I looked in a...

    Warbler Song, Durham, UK

Recorded this unseen Warbler song on the coast this afternoon. I didn't recognise it, although it seems to have some Whitethroat qualities about it. After several minutes continuous singing it went quiet and I never heard it again.

    Sri Lanka species

Was searching for Sri Lanka Scaly Thrush in Sinharaja when we found this bird. The local guide believed it to be a immature Sri Lanka Scaly Thrush, but I cannot find a description for that and photos I have seen of immature Scaly Thrushes, from which it was split, look much like the adult...

    Juv. Yellow-legged v Lesser Black-backed Gulls

The more I look at these the more confused I get. Any pointers gratefully received. The photos were taken in the last week in the North East of England. There are two birds pictured with two photos of each.

    Shearwater Estate, Whitburn List

Last weekend I moved into my new home on the Shearwater estate in Whitburn, County Durham. It is on the edge of Whitburn Coastal Park and about 300 metres from the sea, which can just be seen through a gap in the houses from the spare bedroom. There is great potential for a good garden list, as...

    British Columbia Selection

My parents have just returned from a few weeks in Canada with some photos for me to ID for them. Can you confirm my ID's please? 1. Veery 2. Swainson's Thrush 3. Olympic Gull - Primaries seem to dark for Glaucous-winged 4. Hammond's Flycatcher - Given the primary projection it can only be this...

    Birding Shetland

At short notice I have a weeks holiday from work beginning on Saturday and am contemplating a trip to Shetland. I have never visited the islands before and expect that if I make the trip I would based myself on Mainland. Anyone got any tips on birding Shetland for the first time visitor. Where...

Zimbabwe - Up close and personal with Wild Dogs

Based on the lack of up to date trip reports that I could find Zimbabwe does not appear to be a popular destination, but probably deserves to be much more regularly visited by birders. I found the country to be beautiful, friendly and safe and for Africa almost hassle free, in fact standing...

    A few from Zimbabwe

All taken in the south east of Zimbabwe. 1st and 3rd in Save Valley Conservancy and the 2nd in a small park on the edge of Mutare. I believe the first to be Klaas's Cuckoo, although the white spot behind the eye was next to invisible in the field. The second I have down as a European Nightjar...

    Chinese Warbler ID Guide

Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere, but the paper linked below by Per Alström, should help in sorting out those tricky Phylloscopus and Seicercus warblers...

    Zimbabwe Lowveld

I am going to be spending a couple of weeks in the Lowveld of Zimbabwe at the end of March beginning of April mostly around Save Valley Conservancy and probably Gonarezhou. I am expecting to see plenty of African Wild Dogs and other mammals, but also want to pick up a few new birds. There is not...

    Chile & Easter Island Oct/Nov 2012

Chile had long been on my list of places to go and as South American countries go is relatively safe and easy to do on your own. My original itinerary had been focused entirely on birds, but after some negotiation I was persuaded to drop Chiloe Island and instead go to Easter Island, whilst this...

    Vulture Massacre

My friend is currently working in East Africa and in the last few days went to investigate an elephant carcass surrounded by dead vultures, which had been spotted from the air. Investigation of the scene revealed 182 dead vultures, of which 15 were Lappet-faced and the rest were White-backed...

    St. Lucia and Trinidad

When looking at organising a weeks break to Trinidad, we considered going to Tobago for a couple of days, but the number of species found there but absent or more difficult on Trinidad that would be lifers was only three. Once I found out that the BA flight from Gatwick to Trinidad stopped at...

Internet Explorer 9 and Quick Time

I have recently moved to IE9 from IE8 and now whenever I click on a mp3 file it opens in Quick Time rather than Windows Media Player. This is despite the default being windows media player, any ideas on how to change this, everything I have found suggests going into Windows Media Player...

    Avian Vocalisation Center

Don't know how many people are aware of this site, but I only came across it recently. It has some great recordings not available elsewhere on the web, including the likes of Large-billed Reed-Warbler. http://avocet.zoology.msu.edu/

    Gull - Northern California

Taken last week at Bodega, sorry for the poor quality digiscoped images, but excuses include bright sunlight, strong wind and standing on top of a cliff with the bird on the beach below. The bird stood out from the crowd particularly due to its grey primaries and also the fact that all the...
