What flycatcher sound is this? Upstate NY

There is a car going by in the middle but there are several calls on both ends of the audio. You might need to turn up the volume to hear it. I am sure it is a Flycatcher, and I am pretty sure on what flycatcher it is but I want confirmation.

    Worm-eating Warbler?

Here is a recording that I took yesterday. It sounds like a Worm-eating Warbler to me. We heard the song about 40 times. There are three songs in the recording at 5, 21, 52 seconds. Looking at it in RavenLite the frequency appears to be perfect. Also we played a recording hoping to call it in...

    Duck ID, NY

Anyone care to make a guess as to what these are. I only had my 18-135mm so I wasn't able to get the best photos as they were far away. I think they are Hooded Mergansers.

Is this sound a Long-eared Owl?

Today we had a probable owl down the road from us. It was vocalizing quite a bit but as we approached it stopped. We couldn't find it even though we looked pretty well. It sounds somewhat like a cross between a dog and an owl. I am almost certain that it isn't a dog as there were no tracks in...

Maine, near Acadia National Park, September 13th-21st

Here are few highlights that I had on a vacation to Maine. We stayed at a house near Ellsworth, in Hancock County. It was about a half hour from Mount Desert Island and a half hour from Schoodic Point. The place we stayed at had a great view of the inlet, where the tide would drastically...

Anyone have any tips on what characteristics a location should have to be good for 'half-hardies' in winter? By half-hardies I mean birds like American Robin, Eastern Bluebird, Tree Swallow, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Golden-crowned Kinglet, certain sparrows, Hermit Thrush, etc. - birds that...

Lesser Black-backed Gull? Schoodic Point, Maine

Today I saw a gull which looked to be a Lesser Black-backed Gull. It appeared slightly darker in the field than in the photos. All the photos are of the same gull except the last: http://picasaweb.google.com/thebooksearcher/LesserBlackBackedGull# Anyone have any thoughts on this?

    Butterfly ID, New York

Photo was taken in Upstate (Oneida County) NY. Also yesterday I saw a large black butterfly - about as large as a Monarch - what would that probably be? Probably not hard but I don't have a butterfly guide - if anyone has any recommendations on one I would appreciate it.

What is the policy on photos for the opus? I know of a guy know has photos of many western birds that are restricted in range and are hard to find a photo of. I would ask him if we could use some of them here but I wanted to see if this would be ok.

    Red-fronted Woodpecker melanerpes rubrifrons

Does anyone know if this is still considered a species? There is no page for it here and Google only has 60 results but the bird is mentioned in the Handbook of Avian Hybrids.

Adding images without breaking the page

I thought it would be helpful to have photos in the opus for each of the major plumages of Bonaparte's Gull. So I added three photos. Now although the page still looks pretty good all the edit buttons appear at the bottom. What do I do to fix this problem?

    Bonaparte's or Black-headed Gull?

Here is a gull that was posted on a listserve that I am a member of. I asked the photographer if I could post it here and they agreed. I have a few thoughts on it but I would like to see what the people here think.

How many rarities are we missing?

Inspired by this thread I decided to see what people think now (the other thread is 4 years old): http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=18005 That thread states about 800 rarities are missed in the UK every year. If that is the case (which I think it is), think of how many we miss here in...
