    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2023

Another very early record, with at least one Willow Emerald photographed on Hadleigh Downs (south Essex) yesterday.

    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2023

Small Red-eyeds were out at Hadleigh (south Essex) on Sunday 11th, along with at least 3 Southern Emeralds on Canvey Island - both very early.

    UK Dragonflies & Damselflies 2021

Fair enough, the Emeralds in SE Essex are probably a bit of an anomaly as Scarce are common and very much the default species, and there's nowhere I'm aware of locally where Common are present and Scarce aren't. Definitely a case of roles reversed, hence my comment. Also worth pointing out that...

    UK Dragonflies & Damselflies 2021

If you're after Southern Emeralds they favour the north east side of the hedge line which runs alongside the A130 Canvey Way. If you start in the corner of the field nearest the big roundabout and work your way along from there you should be fine (will be obvious when you get there). Best...

    Waders in Scotland

Number 2 looks like the same bird in number 3 to me... not sure you could rule out a Sanderling for the other bird in pic 3 either.

Migrant or Southern Migrant Hawker, Essex

Thanks very much Adrian. It's one of the earlier sightings locally so hopefully there'll be several more appearing over the next few weeks. Out of interest, is it usual for a female to show so much blue on the abdomen and eyes?

Migrant or Southern Migrant Hawker, Essex

Photos taken by a friend at Bowers Marsh, Essex this morning. They assumed Migrant, but I'm leaning towards SMH - anyone able to confirm either way please..? Edit: Not sure what's happening with these photos - link to originals below: http://www.sognet.org.uk/Photos.asp

    RFI Willow Emeraid

The Scarce Emeralds at Wat Tyler are on the small pool to the right of the entrance track, approx. 100m after the entrance gate, i.e. before you get to the cottages on the left. Probably the easiest place nearby is at RSPB Bowers Marsh, just east of Wat Tyler. Take the track from the car park...

    UK dragonflies and damselflies, 2016

From the main car park by The Bull pub, head down the east side of the woods with the playground on your left. Continue down the hill with the gardens on your left and at the end of the gardens you'll cross a small stream and be on a gravel path. Turn left here and last week the SMH were 200m or...

    UK dragonflies and damselflies, 2016

Check here for more updates on SMH sightings: http://www.sognet.org.uk/News.asp They were fairly easy in Hockley Woods last week, surprising that they're there given the habitat is apparently at odds with their normal haunts on the continent, and completely different to the other sites they've...

Biking Birder 2015 - A cycle ride to every RSPB and WWT reserve.

I think it's probably all the same wood, but we saw them this year from the small car park which is on the minor road east from Spean Bridge, south of the river, just after it crosses the railway. Grid ref would be approx. 228 815.
