    Latest piece

An accomplished work. Not easy to portray birds at such angles. Nice treatment of the shadows and impressive water rendering. Fading the edges really works. Do you paint in the field or studio?

What is your most 'treasured' 'Bird' ID book, and why?

For me it has to be Lars Jonsson's 'Birds of Europe'. Love the freshness of the work.

    Hiking with camera equipment

Hi Not easy to carry everything but found a Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 rucksack suits me. Bins round the neck, Gitzo 5 series tripod with 600 lens and camera mounted over shoulder or lens in the sack and tripod over shoulder if I'm walking far. For other stuff I have Lowepro lens cases and utility...

    Beanbag fillers

Used rice once as a filler for a car window beanbag for taking photos. It must have got wet and the rice swelled up overnight and burst. Not a pretty sight in the car next morning as it was a 5kg bag!!!. Use hard plastic pellets now.

    updates for computer keeps apearing.

My old XP laptop does the same thing, new updates almost every day. Recently my Vista laptop had a hard drive failure and after it was repaired and ,after a system boot disc recovery was done back to factory settings, installed 195 windows updates!!!!!! Hope Windows 7 is better.

    Lens Cloths

I keep a new Pentax, Swarovski or Viking microfibre cloth and in a small sealed plastic bag for my scope and bins. Another is kept for spectacles which often get grease on them. A quick breathe on the lens and a wipe is usually all that's needed. The ones you get with glasses are of a poorer...

    Nikkor 600mm AFS II

Hi again Dave In my own opinion the main disadvantage of the FX sensor in the D3 is the fact that my 600mm is 600mm. With the DX sensor it is effectively about 900mm, giving extra 'reach'. In bird photography 'reach' is important, as a 600mm will give you 20% more than a 500mm. Getting inside a...

    Using flash on birds

I use balanced fill flash with a better beamer and besides allowing a higher shutter speed , the amount of flash used is lessened, therefore leading to the bird not being upset. I use a 600mm f4 Nikon with Wimberley head and flash extender bracket to get the flash away from the lens axis which...

    Nikkor 600mm AFS II

Hi Bob, glad joined the dark side. Glad to see you're using a Gitzo and gimbal. I use a 5540LS with WimberleyII and it is so stable with my non VR 600f4/D3 combo. The D3's high ISO performance and frame rate make sharp pics and flight shots much easier. I agree that good long lens technique can...

    Caring for your fresnel lens

Hi there I assume you are referring to a 'Better Beamer' or flash extender which attaches to your flashgun. The fresnel lens that usually comes in a blue plastic wallet can crack if you mistreat it, especially in very cold weather. Once velcroed onto the flashgun, be aware that direct sunlight...

    Sketching in wet weather

As I spend a lot of time sketching in the great British weather, sketching in drizzle or light rain is part of the game. As normal pencils etc. rufuse to work in these situations, I find that having a wet weather system invaluable. The best I've come across is a Berol Karisma Graphite Aquarelle...

Panasonic LX5 a new contender for Digiscoping ?

Hi Folks Thinking about getting a digiscoping camera and a Leica Adapter 4 to fit on my Apo82. As Leica's own camera is silly money, will the Panasonic LX5 just screw onto the adapter without modification and work ok? I've not ventured into digiscoping before so excuse my lack of knowledge.

    Looking for a starting point

Here's a few ideas to get you started. -Try buying a load of A4 cheap sketchbooks from your local market stalls(99peach for me), try as many types of pencil that you can lay your hands on until you find one that feels right. -Alternatively try a .7 or .9 Pentel mechanical pencil with 2B lead in...

Gitzo vs Manfrotto - your experience

I used a Manfrotto 055 Pro (old and heavy) for 15 years to hold my 600mm Nikon. Switched a couple of years ago to a Gitzo carbon 5540 and Wimberley head. I kicked myself all over the place for not switching sooner. The Gitzo, with no centre column is as stiff as a stiff thing with stiffness...

Nikon D3s delivers at iso 6400

I too have been grinning for the past year or so since I got a D3. Fantastic ISO performance. Don't know why so many wildlife snappers go on about high megapixels when high ISO performance is much more important.

    Ducks heads

Now Duke don't duc the issue! Just duke it out with the forum members. We all know that ducks are devilishly difficult and daft defiant dribblers. I've been trying to paint a Teal this afternoon at Old Moor RSPB reserve. Darn me if the thing didn't keep on moving all over the place. When will...

    Ducks heads

I think it's due to the fact that the feathers on the head are often iridescent and this leads to the impression of 'lacking focus'. If the highlight in the eye was not as sharp as a sharp thing when the autofocus sensor is on it then I'd be worried about the lens resolution or some other...

    Anyone use a laser mouse?

Great for photo editing. I use a Logitec wireless one. The receiver is really small and fits neatly in the USB port of a laptop.

    Tripod And Head Compatability

Most tripods use a 3/8" thread to attach the head to and heads likewise. You should have no problem attaching any normal head to your tripod. I recommend the new Gitzo G2180 fluid head with the counterbalance system and sliding balance plate. 3/8 to 1/4 adaptors are available on ebay...

    Thank you Leica

Leica, and others get a hammering here on Birdforum. I suppose it is general negativity you see on so many forums nowadays. A place for folk to moan about everything. I would like to thank Leica for producing the Apo82 and especially the new eyepiece. I spend a lot of time looking through a...
