Covid restrictions in England at nature reserves

It is interesting to compare and contrast how the various nature conservation organisations have responded to the pandemic in the UK. Just like our Government there is no consistent approach. This applies especially to hides, during the pandemic most required face coverings to be worn and social...

Coronavirus and the launch of the Zeiss SF 32mm

It seems rather unfortunate that the much anticipated 8x and 10x 32SF binoculars are due to reach the market any time now. I wonder how safe it is to try various models of binocular at your local retailer or optical event at a nature reserve? What hygiene precautions are recommended indeed will...

    Fieldscope 11 30x eyecup replacement

Have a 60mm Fieldscope ED 11 bought in September 1991. Some time later (mid nineties) I purchased the 30x WA eyepiece. The rubber eyecup needs replacing but Nikon inform me they no longer stock replacements. Any ideas as to where I might obtain a suitable replacement? Thanks Robert

Norfolk Bird and Wildlife Fair 21st & 22nd May

My wife and I are having our annual holiday in Norfolk in just over a week's time and discovered details of the Norfolk Wild bird and Wildlife Fair at Mannington Hall. Have just bought tickets on line and hope it's worth a visit. Many years ago the NT and BTO organised a Birdfair at Blickling...

    Sensor Cleaning

Advice, please on cleaning the sensor in my Olympus OMD -E5. There is some smearing due to my hamfisted attempt to clean using a sable brush. There seems to be conflicting advice regarding using commercial cleaning fluids vs breathing on to the sensor. Any advice welcome

    My cure for telescope anxiety

In the Zeiss binocular forum Bobby Dids started a"My cure for telescope anxiety" thread. I thought I would share my approach in the Spotting Scopes forum. My acknowledgements to Bobby. I bought a Nikon ED Fieldscope 2 at the Rutland Bird Fair in 1991, it was at the time very highly rated and...

    Venice April 2015

Visiting Venice April 2015 I shall be visiting Venice in April (20th -28th) on a non birding holiday with my wife. Intend to use the Vaporetto and visit Burano and Torcello. What birding opportunities are there and any other advice, including other places accessible using the water bus? Could...

    RSPB Website

I'm no computer expert but what has happened to the RSPB website? Been unable to access it since this afternoon. The website now states-This domain name has been registered with Easyspace.com Has it been hacked, hijacked or what?

    Mastermind 22 March

Last night my wife and I watched "Mastermind" and one of the contenders answered questions on British Birds. My wife who regards herself as a "dutiful" birdwatcher was surprised at her ability to answer most of the questions, whereas I simply felt smug about my success rate. My wife however...

    Peanuts?

I have been buying peanuts to feed garden birds since I joined the RSPB in 1974. The first feeders were the nylon netting bags which were readily available. 25 years ago moved to a house with a bigger garden including trees and bushes and so I started using the available peanut feeders and later...

    SE 8x32 demise?

So much has been written on Bird Forum about the Nikon SE 8x32 that I felt I needed to try some. At the UK Bird Fair I asked to try some on the Nikon Sports Optics stand, eventually after some blank looks one of the older and presumably more experienced staff explained that they were no longer...

    Fighting for Birds- Mark Avery

Just seen a review of "Fighting for birds" author Mark Avery on the BTO website. Enthusiastically received by both Chris Packham and Andy Clements (Director BTO). This must be essential reading for all British Birders, interested in conservation. If the style is similar to Avery's colomns in...

    CTC 30x75 stay on case

Bought a CTC 30x75 drawscope two years ago and enjoy using it. The rubber end cups and carrying harness were less than satisfactory. The cups dangled with the harness when using a monopod and then became slightly loose, particularly the one covering the eye piece end. Just bought the stay-on...

Less than good Swarovski Service (accessories)

Many positive comments have been made regarding Swarovski service, but it seems they are not as efficient to their suppliers. Over two weeks ago I ordered a stay on case for my CTC 30x75 scope (yes I know its an eccentric choice) from Wex. When I phoned Wex after the normal delivery period had...

    Nikon Spareparts UK

I have lost the Nikon name plate on the rubber armouring of a pair of Nikon HG 8x32s. I have left a telepnone message with the Nikon spareparts dept. I decided to follow this up with an email which I copied from the Nikon website it is listed as [email protected]. Unfortunately I obtain "no...

    Real Technique

On Tuesday night while idely flicking through the TV Channels, I came across a fascinating programme on BBC Alba (Scotland). It was about life on some commercial hunting estates in the Islands and Highlands of Scotland. Not for the squimish as a recently shot deer was disembowelled on camera by...

    Boat Trip Advice

I am going to Saundersfoot with my wife from 5th -12th May. Please could you advise me on the best boat trips? My wife is a "accepting" companion but not the keenest birder. I fancy at least one boat trip to see the local seabirds and choughs. When we have holidayed in the Scotland Islands, Manx...

    Royal Aproval Ross 9x35

Many people I am sure enjoy the detailed discussion on the "Alpha" threads as to which binocular is best. I enjoy the porro vs roof debates and currently how the new Zeiss HTs will compare to the competition. Much as I enjoy this discussion I am often left wondering how on earth I can continue...

    Bill Oddie's bins

I watched the BBC's Springwatch Christmas Special yesterday and noticed that Bill Oddie has changed his binoculars from Leica to Swarvoski. Overall all the "alpha" bins are used by the celebrity birders, but I like to notice who uses which brand. Not sure whether Kate Humble has gone the other...

    Panasonic Gift Pack

I purchased a Lumix G3 package mid August and sent off for the "5 year warranty + Free Photography Gift Pack worth over 230" on 1st September and the end date to receive claims was the end of September. I have not received this pack and I know of at least one other person who has not received...

    Nikon 8x32 SE CF

Bristol cameras in the UK are offering these binoculars for £529. The CF apparently stands for "close focussing", has the specification altered from the plain SE?

    Panasonic/Leica Macro Lens

I have recently purchased a Lumix G3 package including the 14-42mm and 45-200mm zoom lenses. My local Natural History Society covers a wide spectrum of interest especially wild flowers, fungi, butterflies and dragonflies. I am considering the Panasonic/Leica F2.8 45mm Macro lenses for use on...

    Wilkinson's fat balls UK

I bought a tub of 50 fat balls today from the Wilkinsons store in Halifax for £5.99. They were also selling tubs of 35 for £5. They are still in nylon netting but the price is very competive - roughly half the price of RSPB equivalent. With regard to quality the local birds seem very happy I am...

    Springwatch & binoculars

It seems that most of the presenters are now discouraged from wearing binoculars even when out in the open air. Have other viewers noticed this? We know Chris advertises Nikon, Iolo Leica, Martin uses Swarvoski, Kate used to have Swarovski but is now using Leica? Previous presenters such as Bill...

    Fieldscope ED 11

I have a 60mm ED Fieldscope 11 with the original 20x and 20-45x zoom, I later added the 30x wide angle eyepiece (rubber turn down eye cup) . The scope is in good condition so is it worth upgrading any of the eyepieces? I tend to use the 30x mainly and very occaisionally the zoom. How much...
