    Winter residents

I had my first green parakeet this week. Plenty of them around here in South East London but first time I've seen one at my feeders. Also one of the peanut feeder was destroyed recently - I wonder now if it was the parakeet rather than the usual squirrels that did it.

    Nyjer seed killing my lawn

Anyone know how to stop squirrels from sucking out the nyger? I added paprika a year ago but that meant the finches stopped coming too.

    Goldcrest

I had my first ever goldcrest today as well. Not timid at all as I approached to as close as 4 feet away to watch it hop around the feeding area, mainly pecking at the fat balls.

    New food but.........

I put out raisans, currants and dates out for starlings in mesh feeders and they don't touch anything else leaving the seed feeders for the other birds.

    Goldfiches and my nijer feeder?

I bought a nijer seed feeder and a bag of nijer seed after seeing my first goldfinch checking out some flower heads in the garden. The seed feeder took a week to be spotted but now has two visitors frequently during the day. I have a birdtable too but have never seen them visiting it.

    Sparrow Problems

House sparrows and pigeons are all I'm getting at the moment and lots of them! The tits, blackbirds, starlings and robins I had earlier in the year have all disappeared. Not sure if it's the fact that there's so many cats around in this good weather. The sparrows are a mixed blessing. I like...

Can I out smart a squirrel? Read this!

After years of trying to stop them and watching them destroy even supposedly squirrel proof feeders (apart from the Nuttery mentioned previously) I just put out a squirrel box at the point where all the squirrels enter my garden. Problem solved. They happily use that and never come to the...

    Grackle killing and eating sparrows

Very entertaining thread - learnt a lot about creativity in feeding and psychanalysing our feathered f(r)iends! ;)

    Caged feeders -- squirrel proof?

I've got one called the Nuttery that the squirrels ignore even though it's full of nuts. It's one of those metal bar caged style ones and the tits use it regularly. The best solution I've found though was just to buy a squirrel feeder and nail it close to their route to my other feeders...
