The Birder's Guide to Africa, Mills

I can only completely agree Andy. I had planned to give a copy of one of these away as a present but I would feel guilty about doing so now. The huge stack of pages devoted to bird families is pointless and quite frankly bizarre. I can't remember being so disappointed with a book; I haven't...

    Lineated Woodcreeper

"XC’s taxonomy follows that of the IOC, which does not split Lepidocolaptes albolineatus.....it would therefore seem sensible for XC to align its taxonomy now with the SACC by elevating the five subspecies of L. albolineatus currently recognized by XC to species status. If this departure from...

    Terpsiphone paradisi? Malaysia

Well, Asian Paradise Flycatcher has been split into three recently and T.paradisi now refers to Indian Paradise-Flycatcher. So the Bornean bird is presumably T.affinis (Blyth's Paradise-Flycatcher).

    Cydia sp

Thanks David, I very nearly overlooked it. I see they are very scarce in Hunts, not sure about over the border here in VC29?

    Cydia sp

I thought this might be Cydia fagiglandana rather than the more regular (in the Cambridgeshire Fens at least) C. splendana. Any thoughts? Thanks Ian

    Ecuadorian birds

First photo - possibly Dusky-chested Flycatcher?

    next one

Looks more like Black-billed Thrush to me - habitat looks better for that species too!

    Masked Flowerpiercer? Ecuador

Yes, an immature male I guess.

    Yet more micros, Cambs

Looking at Grapholita pictures online, perhaps janthinana is a good match. I have no idea if its diagnostic but the pale legs might be a helpful?

    Yet more micros, Cambs

Thanks both - I had started to to stray towards a Coleophora for the first one, so yes, happy for that one to continue to be ignored....

    Yet more micros, Cambs

Two tricky ones I haven't been able to put any money on: A - closest match I can come up with is Ptocheuusa paupella which would be unlikely over here I think. So I assume that I am overlooking something more common (maybe an Elachista sp.?) B - A tiny tortrix - Epinotia nanana? Cheers!

    Tortrix sp

Thanks Andy. I imagine E. rubiginosana is pretty scarce round here - there's only been a couple of records in adjacent Hunts for example.

    Tortrix sp

Is this Epinotia rubiginosana? I considered Claivigesta purdeyi (which I've recorded before) and the white markings down to the costa look too strong for that species? Thanks in advance!

    More micros, Cambs

Thanks Andy, Martin I recorded what I thought was (probably) Ephestia unicolorella a few weeks back so that might be a good call. With the final photo - I'm still to find any pics of a Cnephasia that look quite like this - I actually thought it looked more like a gelechid at first! The only...

    More micros, Cambs

Hi folks, some from the last few days to help me out with: a - Limnaecia phragmitella? b - Acrobasis sp.? Can't get it to exactly match anything in particular. c - Terrible photo but possibly just a worn Apple Leaf Miner? d - Not sure about this one. Seems superficially similar to some...

    Mompha

Thanks Rob, crossed posts there I think. Glad I got there in the end on this one, the illustration in Sterling & Parsons isnt as useful as it could be!

    Mompha

I actually think this isnt a mompha after all. Blastodacna hellerella seems more likely?
  20. Ian David Ellis

    Mompha

Apologies for the shocking photo of this micro. The best match I can come up with is Mompha divisella or perhaps M. bradleyi; both of which are rather scarce here in Cambs I think

    3 x micros, Cambs

Size wise, I'm not sure if it helps but here's an uncropped version of the photo with a Foxglove Pug in the foreground.
