ATX - 80. Then and Now.

Yes Jason, the ATX - 80. The scope I am looking at buying was manufactured in 2007 but this model is still being made and sold. I wondered if there has been any upgrade since 2007 (lens coatings etc?)

ATX - 80. Then and Now.

I am considering buying an ATX 80 second hand. The year of manufacture is 2007. Does anyone know if there have been any noticeable improvements/changes over the intervening 17 years. Perhaps to lens coatings? Many thanks.

Cuba but not as we planned it

I visited here in 2019. It's called Cueva de los Peces. Interesting to see your Blue-headed Quail Dove has a touch of black in the crown. We were told that this was due to the un-natural diet of kitchen scraps. A blacker example attached (same site) together with a comparison photo taken in the...

    A Tale of Two Go-rounds:Gambia January 2020

A bit late reading this thread but I suffered a double go-around flying from Buenos Aires to Iguazu. Take off had been delayed a couple of hours because of bad weather but there was still a full on storm raging as we approached. No visible signs of a runway (when we left in better weather it...

    How's your 2019 gone?

2019 was not too bad at all. Overseas I enjoyed a superb trip to Cuba seeing all the endemics except Zapata Rail (probably extinct) and Cuban Kite (no time to visit the right areas). I also achieved a bucket list ambition to see the smallest bird in the world. Bee Hummingbirds were stunningly...

    A fly for ID

Thanks RB & Ficedula, I took the photograph in sand dunes at Porth Neigwl so Philonicus albiceps is a good call. I have just checked the NBN atlas and it has already been recorded from very close to my location.

    A fly for ID

Can anyone put a name to this? Photographed on LLyn Peninsular and it almost seemed to jump as it flew short distances from rock to bramble. Thanks John

Thank you RB and Ficedula, I should have known better than to consider a rarity, always go for the commoner alternative first.

Bumblebee mimic for ID I took these poor photos of what looks like a Bumblebee mimic in Cheshire last May. I have a species in mind but it appears to be a rarity in my area. I hope the photos are good enough for someone to suggest an ID. John

    Butterflies of Foxholes N.R.

I am spending next week in the Cotswolds somewhere between Chipping Norton and Burford. The nearest reserve is Foxholes but it is a big area. Can anyone point me to the best areas, I would like to photograph White Admiral but don't know what else might occur there in July. Cheers John

    Appalachian Butterflies

Jim, I should have asked, what features do you see that confirm Aphrodite Fritillary (this was my first tentative ID based on web images) Andy, I was mis-reading your first post regarding 'greenish-blue tint' and Greenish Blue butterfly. My apologies.

    Appalachian Butterflies

Thank you Jim, I hadn't seen your post when I replied to Andy. I have no book source, I was just comparing images on the internet. Regards John

    Appalachian Butterflies

Many thanks Andy, that's very helpful. My further thoughts ... Silver-spotted Skipper and Great Spangled Fritillary look good. I don't see any greenish tints on the 'tailed' blue so still wonder about Eastern Tailed Blue I probably can't sort Appalachian, Spring or Summer Azures on my photos...

    Appalachian Butterflies

And a few more... not really got a clue on these 1. Aphrodite Fritillaries? 2. Aphrodite Fritillary? 3. Black Swallowtail? 4. Unknown? Cheers John

    Appalachian Butterflies

I have recently driven up the Blue Ridge Parkway through the Appalachians. I have tried to identify these butterflies but would like confirmations if anyone can help. 1. Appalachian Tiger Swallowtail (uncertain! Based purely on thickness of black forewing bands) 2. Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (...

    Appalachians - Blue Ridge Parkway

In early June I arrive at Atlanta airport. I only have 7 days and intend to drive part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Does anyone have any recommendations on must see locations, good 'birdy' places to stay, any specialities of the area, or any general birding hot spots? John

Last Butterfly of the year, 2018

November 6th. One Small Copper still hanging on at Ludworth Quarry, in Greater Manchester. Roosting on a ragwort but when I returned 30 minutes later it had flown. Day temp today 12 degrees but with a stiff southerly wind. The slope below the quarry is SW facing but not particularly sheltered...
