Thought this might be of general interest?

As improbable and unlikely as it may be, Little Auk did occur on the KGV (c2 miles away) c40years ago….don’t think I’ll be seeing one flying past…any time soon. Regarding RC’s, a bit like the P.Office too institutional and arrogant! My terms and conditions for garden list acceptance are as...

Thought this might be of general interest?

On holiday last week in Cyprus, I bumped into a very keen garden lister, being of the same ilk, we exchanged lists. Both having been living at our respective abodes for 40 and 41 years respectively, of course all the “top drawer birds” were exchanged on both sides much to our mutual glee. I’ve...

Odd Wheatear on Paphos last week?

I think? I can recall it tail cocking on occasion but I can’t swear to it! 😩

Odd Wheatear on Paphos last week?

That might be subjective, as looking on line the images appear to perhaps look a touch longer than they do in the Collins illustrations. I note that the images of Finsch’s on line look extremely compelling to my eye, apart from the bird being “very dark” also showing rusty flanks, don’t know if...

    Turtle sp…Paphos last week.

Found what looked like a pair of mating turtles inshore off the headland, the default would be Loggerhead, failing that, Green Turtle, however looking on line at the head pattern, it appears to look more like Hawksbill. Although they’re not supposed to occur in the Eastern Med? Cheers

Odd Wheatear on Paphos last week?

I would think that you would be better placed than most, to have the necessary exposure to the variable plumages of Cyp.Pied Andy. Many thanks👍

Odd Wheatear on Paphos last week?

Came across this bird at the Architectural Ruin on the headland, it did look odd…ie being particularly dark, more so than ye’r average female/imm type Eastern Black-eared Wheatear. As far as the images are concerned, it was unfortunate that I was always following it into the sun. That said...

Hooded Crows dive bombing drones persistently!

Witnessed the above whilst sitting at Cafe Nerros in Paphos (old town) during last week. There were three birds involved, seemingly taking turns to dive bomb a single drone that was possibly being flown “for the purpose of”. Has anyone else witnessed this behaviour elsewhere? Cheers

Not sure if this is a Chiffchaff ???

I don’t possess the requisite IT skills for that seawatcher, however if we agree on step 1. it does got to step 4. at the top if you look carefully you’ll note that P5 is still projecting to the end whereby P4 has curved into it’s (p5) shadow. Hopefully it doesn’t sound as “clear as mud” and...

Not sure if this is a Chiffchaff ???

Image 2. is excellent Don, for showing the wing formula. If you look at the “steps in the wing” starting with the 1st which is p3 you’ll note there are 4 steps (emarginations) going up the wing…this means Chiffy, if you only have 3 steps this will mean Willow Warbler.👍

    Female Kestrel, Paphos headland yesterday.

I’ve certainly read it somewhere in lit. remarking on the pale secondaries for LK, also the seemingly pronounced moustachial on female LK’s, not something I’ve noted on home birds? Regarding P10 being shorter than P9 that’s by degree even with Kestrel. A look on line should show that it can be...

    Female Kestrel, Paphos headland yesterday.

Cheers, I suspected as much, so it doesn’t say much for the “lack of underwing spotting” to the secondaries often quoted as a feature, albeit not a stand alone one.

    Paphos this am any ideas?

Thanks guys!….an “expert” told me that it was a common Blunt-nosed Viper in a very matter of fact way, and that the bite was fatal with circa 30-40 fatalities each year. (wonder if he offers advice on BF?) Needless to say from there on in…I continued my “hunting” on stoney paths, avoiding the...
