    Gull ID- Texas Gulf Coast

This is most likely a Herring Gull, and nothing like a Lesser Black Backed or anything like that? The lighting wasn't too good today so the back looks a lot darker than in my guide books. Here on the Gulf Coast juvenile Herring gulls are not uncommon, but adults are, thus I have this ID...

Hawk ID needed. Texas Gulf Coast

Hello again. Since I primarily photograph the shorebirds and waders I don't have much ID skill as far as hawks are concerned. This must be a juvenile, or I wouldn't have been able to get this close. 500mm(750mm-35mm equiv). So what is it? REGARDS~Bill

    Another Sandpiper, Texas Gulf Coast

Hi! I've already posted this image in Birds of North America. I identified it as a Stilt Sandpiper. When I captured the image I thought it was a dowitcher, the bill was similar . Looking at it later I noticed the bird was too slender to be one. I have not seen too many of them around here...

    Yellowleg Question_Texas Gulf Coast

Hi. I posted I picture of these two(different photo) the other day. Due to their behavior I am fairly certain that they are a mated pair. I have two questions. Am I incorrect in IDing them as Lesser Yellowlegs? Also, it appears the female(left) is considerably smaller than the male(right). I...

    Tern ID needed from Texas

Taken about a month ago on the Texas Gulf Coast. I'm thinking it may be a gull-billed tern. Not the usual forster's, sandwich, least, royal, or other common tern, but then again it may be. Maybe a juvenile? Heck,it could even be a seagull. ~Bill

    Another Rail Question fromTexas

Don't you hate to see a nice photograph posted here at bird forum that is identified totally incorrectly, like a crane that is really an Ibis? Well I may be guilty of this infraction, but not to the great extent as in the crane/ibis example. I have posted images of what I thought were King...

Bird ID needed on Texas Gulf Coast

I usually photograph shorebirds and waders, and can identify most of them, but I don't know what this bird is. Is it a Savannah sparrow? It was photographed a few days ago at the San Bernard NWR on a branch next to a salt marsh.

Using Flash Units with Telephoto Lens

I need some basic information on the use of an external flash/telephoto lens to take bird photos on cloudy days, to bring out feather detail, etc. I use a Sony A-700 and was thinking of purchasing a Sony HVL-F56AM Flash, which should be good to 40 feet or so. It also can be fired remotely, and...

eye test (can you identify these birds by their eyes alone?

I've noticed that many of the wading and shorebirds in the southern United States have very distinctive eyes. I've assembled a collection of twelve from my photographs. Can you identify the birds they belong to?

    autofocus speed with Sony A-700?

I have owned a Sony A-100 since August 2006, and am happy with image quality and image stabilization. However, I use a Tamron 200-500mm lens, and generally must manually focus to catch birds in flight. The AF is too slow. The question is, for anyone using the A-700, has the AF capability improved?~

I was wondering what you guys thought about this photo

When I shoot pictures of birds in flight I try to get the whole bird in, unless its a close up. For example, the 2nd photo of a long-billed curlew. However, the first photo, same species, has its left wing off screen. (Photo was shot in RAW at ISO 100, no cropping) Nonetheless, although the...

I've been enjoying the viewing of bird forum since last August, yet waited until now to post this and to start uploading my photographs. I took up photography many years ago, yet narrowing down my subjects to birds has been fairly recent, about a year and a half ago. I live in Houston, Texas...
