    Garganey or Green-winged Teal

This bird was seen recently in Pennsylvania and it's species is being debated. What do you think, Garganey or Green-winged Teal? There are individuals firmly in both camps. https://ebird.org/checklist/S155544846

Heartbreaking bird-window collision event in Chicago

This is heartbreaking. There is an effort being made already in Chicago to reduce light pollution related bird deaths. Obviously there is more work to be done. Hopefully this tragic event will spur on additional participation, and not just in Chicago. Major bird-window collision event in...

    Fishing line disposal tubes

Does anyone have any experience with maintaining fishing line disposal tubes such as these? My concern is that small birds, Carolina Wrens in particular, could become trapped while exploring this "cavity" looking for insects. I have seen some with doors of different types, but nothing seemed...

Can first year Common Tern have orange legs?

I saw this bird today in south central Pennsylvania. There were Forster's and Common Terns there, but this guy stayed with the Caspian Terns. It was also not plunge diving, but swooping down to pick up prey off the surface of the water. Can a first year Common Tern still have orange legs? Or...

    Gull identification, Pennsylvania

I'm posting this for a friend. They took this video in early February of a gull with an almost complete hood. If I see a gull with a hood this time of the year, I'm immediately thinking Black-headed Gull. The bird was quite distant, and the images are not great. Anyone have an opinion?

    Iceland or Glaucous Gull, Pennsylvania

There has been some discussion about the identity of the bird shown at this link. It seems pretty obvious to me, but others disagree. What's your opinion?

    Wren identification, Pennsylvania, USA

This bird was found on an island in the Susquehanna River in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on September 30. It was very secretive, and flushed from a small, dense patch of smartweed and purple loosestrife when we were less than five feet from it. The habitat there is dry sandy soil, with...

    Ibis identification, Pennsylvania, USA

This ibis was seen on the Susquehanna River on October 30 in south-central Pennsylvania. Is this bird a juvenile? If so, it probably is not identifiable between Glossy and White-faced, although Glossy would be much more likely at this location. Full sized image here. Opinions?

    Question about merganser feeding behavior

Has anyone ever seen Hooded or Common Mergansers put their face in the water to look for food from the surface. I have seen Red-breasted Mergansers doing this frequently, but I cannot recall ever seeing the other mergansers do it. Mike

Is this a MacGillivray's Warbler in Panama?

Having recently hosted a MacGillivray's Warbler in Pennsylvania there has been some discussion on our listserv about this bird. It just doesn't look right to me, particularly the light iris. Maybe it is the eye influencing me, but it seems more like a vireo of some sort. What do you think? Mike

    Unknown Warbler - Lancaster, Pennsylvania

A friend of mine photographed this bird on September 28. Our initial thoughts were of one thing but upon looking at the pics we thought it was something else. What do you think? Mike

    Seasickness medication recomendations

I am going on my first pelagic trip next week on the Stormy Petrel II out of Hatteras, NC and I am wondering if I should take something for motion sickness. I have spent a lot of time in small boats with no problems. I just don't want to end up spending the day "chumming" rather than enjoying...

    Forster's Terns?

Forster's Terns, Pennsylvania? I initially thought these were Forster's Terns but the bill color is troubling me. It seem to be too reddish. What do you think? Mike

Gull Hybrid or just the lighting? Central Pennsylvania, USA

My friend took this picture yesterday at a nearby lake. It appears to be as big, or bigger, than the nearby Great Black-backed Gulls but the mantle is lighter gray. We are discussing whether it is just a result of the lighting angle or if it is possibly a hybrid, GBBG x Herring Gull perhaps...

Which Thrush? South central Pennsylvania - 12/1/2012

I saw this thrush a few days ago. Hermit Thrush would be the default winter thrush here, but the spots don't seem bold enough and I never got a look at it's back. What do you think? Mike

Why is this snake looking wrinkled?

What is this Eastern Rat Snake (I think) doing? It was lying perfectly straight and still in the middle of the road but it had it's sides drawn in, showing this wavy pattern over it's entire length. I don't think that it was sunning itself, It was fairly warm out. Was it some attempt at...

    Bird song identification, Pennsylvania, USA

I recorded this bird call on June 9th at Middle Creek WMA in northern Lancaster County here in Pennsylvania. The bird was calling from a brushy row of trees near a small stream. There were grassy fields on one side and corn and oat fields on the other. Any ideas?

Bird identification from song, southeastern Pennsylvania

A friend of mine recorded this bird song this morning, high in a sycamore tree in southeastern Pennsylvania. The consensus is that it is either a Northern Parula or a Cerulean Warbler. I think it is a NOPA singing his alternate song. What do you think? Mike

    Manfrotto 055CX3 or 055CXPRO3 or ?

I am looking to replace my old Manfrotto 055XWNB aluminum tripod with a carbon fiber model. I would like to have the all carbon fiber and magnesium PRO model but I am not so sure that I like the two-way center column. It seems like it could be less rigid, and I don't need the ability to use...

Canon PowerShot SX40 HS vs Panasonic Lumix FZ150

I'm considering the purchase of a super zoom camera and I have narrowed the field to either the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS or the Panasonic Lumix FZ150 Other than price ($380 vs $430 vs ) and a slightly longer zoom (840mm vs 600mm equivalent) is there any reason to buy the Canon over the Pansonic...
