    How many Bird Houses??

Merlin Red-Billed Woodhoopoes (Phoeniculus purpureus) have apparently been renamed Green Woodhoopoes. I found some pictures at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/2636/ASRedbill.html This is not my site, or my pics so I can't post them directly. Unfortunately they didn't stick around...

    Defence of young

Personally I've found the Blacksmith Plover more aggressive than the Crowned when you go anywhere near its nest. What about those birds (can't remember what they're called or even where they're found) that divebomb and, er..., s**t on anyone or anything that gets too close.

    How many Bird Houses??

The most we put up was 3 (in a half-acre property in South Africa). Only 2 were ever occupied though, the 3rd was obviously too close to the first because the resident Crested Barbets (Sal has posted a picture somewhere) wouldn't let anything else come close. There was a great battle when...

    Hi from South Africa

Hi Sal How things in Sleepy Hollow? I was at varsity (uni to those in the UK) in Pietermaritzburg, although I'm now in London. I wasn't as keen a birder back then, but I do remember being woken up many times far too early in the morning by a collared sunbird fighting with his reflection in my...

    Hi from yet another Newbie

Thanks for all the welcoming messages. Yep, Colin and Alex are 2 people - not exactly Jekyl & Hyde :) Alex, my wife is also a keen novice birder. Cheers!

    Hi from yet another Newbie

Hi Everyone Wow, I'm glad I found this forum. Looks like it's full of useful info for a novice birder. I'm living in London Docklands (with a great view of the Thames), but am originally from South Africa. It has been quite an experience learning new birds - even the common everyday birds...
