In Search of Hawf Title (No prefix) inch (Scotland)

If Scotbill can't be told from Common xbill genetically or on call, how is it possible to say "bill measurements between Scottish and larger Common Crossbills" as there is no way to tell what is a Large Common Xbill and what is a Scotbill? Which suggests to me that Scotbill is an ecotype of...

    Spoon-billed Sandpipers in China

Fantastic news about the reduction in netting of birds and a testament to the hard work put in my so many people. The problem isn't over yet, but this is good news and has really made my day!

Great news. Would be lovely to see some of your photos - always good to see SBS photos and juveniles are less frequently encountered and photographed. Thanks for keeping us posted! Ken

    Spoon-billed Sandpipers in China

Hey Alan You're probably best looking at this website and following the blog. There's news on the headstarting of birds in the wild and updates on the captive birds. Everything crossed for a successful breeding season this year at Slimbridge and in Chukotka. Happy birding Ken

You do get that impression with the black and white ficedulas. I liked what was written on the Portland Obs website and think it probably sums it up nicely; "So, goodness knows what all this means and it probably doesn't matter anyway since our interpretation of the saga of the infamous...

    Flycatcher Portland UK

I didn't hear it, Jane. It was the least observable and shyest of the small number of flycatchers present (the others were Spot Flies) but did come close at times. It was so windy that it was difficult to hear anything, although I did hear the spot flies a couple of times. Perhaps someone else...

Please don't keep your mouth shut - we learn from each other. That said, I think the last of my photos shows a small white patch bisected as they usually are in Pied Fly. It's a bit of a 'ghost' of a patch rather than a full on blaze, but I'm pretty sure it's there. Ken

Some pics I took of the bird yesterday. Much poorer quality than those at e.g. http://bretteeblahblahblah.blogspot.co.uk/ and http://portlandbirdobs.blogspot.co.uk/search but they might show something. The primary patch is large but I'm trying to get a good impression of the extent of white in...

    Spoon-billed Sandpipers in China

Lime green 05 has been seen as well? That's excellent news. I'm losing track now - wasn't that bird seen further south earlier in the winter? I'll have to go through a few posts on Facebook and see if I can work out who's been seen. Ken

    Spoon-billed Sandpipers in China

Baz Hughes from Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust has provided this information; "This bird – an adult male - was ringed at Meina on 20 June 2013 and, I think, is the mate of Light Green 03." So good to be getting sightings of these birds as they head back north. Ken

Wonder if it could be another one of the headstarted birds as Lime green 08 was. Excellent news - we'll wait to see 'who' it is. Ken

    Spoon-billed Sandpipers in China

Excellent news. It's always nice to hear about non-adult birds as we know so little about them and their haunts. Thanks for reporting and well done too on responding quickly to the gull poaching. Such a positive result and good to know you were taken seriously. Keep up the good work Ken

Excellent news. Always especially good to hear about 1st winter birds as they are so much more elusive than the adults. Hope you see it again and it stays safe. Happy birding Ken

    Spoon-billed Sandpipers in China

Excellent news. So pleased they're being seen. To anyone who might see SBS this season, don't forget to look for rings and leg flags of birds which were marked in Russia this year as part of the head-starting work. You can download an information sheet from the EAAFP web-site and report any...

Yes. Fingers crossed that one or more of the headstarted birds is seen somewhere. They did get off to a good start but it would be fantastic to know that they went on to migrate like the wild-hatched birds. I have every confidence that they have, but would be nice to be sure. Thanks for the...
