    binocular periscope

Here is a photo of something I've long been interested in, a binocular periscope. It's not that I want to look over a wall, or the lip of a trench. I want to swing the arms outward, to increase the stereo separation far beyond what is provided in a porro binocular. I've never had the chance...

Orion ULX 66mm ED zoom spotting scope

I have an Orion telescope, the 90mm Maksutov-Cassegrain, and I have been very impressed with the quality of its optics and mechanical construction. In the Astro telescopes sub-forum I have described digiscoping with it, using my Lumix LX3. Now Orion has introduced a spotting scope with a...

    digiscoping calculator

I'm having trouble connecting to Jay and Wanda's digiscoping calculator website http://www.jayandwanda.com/digiscope/digiscope_calc.html . Does anybody know if they are still online?

Panasonic LX3 on Orion Apex 90mm Maksutov

This may be the first post on the forum about digiscoping with the Panasonic LX3. With its 24-60mm zoom the camera is unlikely to be bought with digiscoping in mind, but if you have an LX3 it is possible to get some good results at max zoom. I know this, because I have lots of static photos to...

    Olympus SP-590UZ ultrazoom

This new camera sports a 26-676mm zoom, and with its teleconverter attachment can go out to 1149mm. Use the 5x digital zoom, and you're out to 3380mm. This is deep into digiscoping range, without the scope! http://www.dpreview.com/news/0901/09010705olympussp590uz.asp

    Canon G10

Those of us who have tried digiscoping with the Canon G7 or G9 are well aware of the difficulty imposed by the design of the 35-210mm lens. The entrance pupil of this lens moves aft when the lens is zoomed to the telephoto end of the range. Significant vignetting results. Virtually all the...

Digiscoping with the Panasonic Lumix G1

Well, not yet, but perhaps soon. The new G1 is the first electronic viewfinder camera with interchangeable lenses. It is smaller than the Olympus E-420. Here is the first preview of this Micro Four Thirds camera: http://www.dpreview.com/previews/panasonicG1/

    Sony W300

Luminous Landscape has just published a favorable review of the Sony W300 http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/shirt-pocket.shtml. With its 35-105mm Zeiss lens it might be good for digiscoping. It mounts an adapter for accessory lenses, so coupling to a scope may be simple.

    Delrin digiscoping adapter

I have posted photos of an adapter I turned from Delrin (acetyl) plastic, here: http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/showthread.php?t=28631. I hope this might be useful for any of you who have access to a lathe.

    Canon converter lenses

I have Canon A570. It takes accessory lenses (wide, tele, or close-up) which mount on an tube adapter which bayonets to the camera body. In the Record menu there is a Converter selection; for the A570 the options are: (1) WC-DC52, (2) TC-DC52A, (3) 250D, (4) none. I sometimes use the wide lens...

25mm f2.8 Zuiko pancake, good for digiscoping?

Of course nobody has their hands on it yet, but the photos are enticing http://www.dpreview.com/news/0803/08030501olympuse420.asp. This pancake lens on the Olympus E-420 with its hinged screen might make a good combination. The lens is full-frame equivalent to a 50mm. I wonder if any of you...

Pentax Optio S12 with remote release

This camera (due to ship in April) looks enticing http://www.dpreview.com/news/0801/08012308pentaxoptios12.asp. The 12 megapixels should have enough room on the large chip (1/1.7"). The biggest draw for digiscopers may be that the S12 will be available with an optional infrared remote release...

adapter thread on Home Shop Machinists BBS

I've posted this http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/showthread.php?t=27410, hoping it will inspire some of my machinist buddies to dust off their telescopes, rev up their lathes, and get digiscoping.

    best ball head for digiscoping?

I know ball heads have been discussed from time to time on this forum, but I can't find a pertinent thread. I'd like a ballhead which has smoothly adjustable friction, to allowing panning on a swimming duck in a pond. I might be willing to spend as much as the cost of a Really Right Stuff BH-40...

need camera advice for Pentax PF-65A II

I've been doing photography since 1971, but just bought my first scope. The Pentax XW14 eyepiece on the Pentax PF-65A II gives a magnification of 28X, and so far I find this is a good choice for looking at the Gilded Flicker, which can usually be found perched atop a saguaro cactus nearby. The...
