Doucs and Dong: a completely non-adventurous trip to Vietnam

Preamble When A Guide to the Mammals of Southeast Asia by Charles Francis came out in 2008 I was immediately struck by how many endemic and near-endemic primates are found in Vietnam, and I had a plan germinate in my brain about trying to see all of them in one trip. I figured three months...

    Vietnam info needed

hi all, I am planning a short trip to Vietnam in August and wondered if you could help me out with some bits of info. I'm heading for Cat Tien, Mang Den, Phong Nha and (if I can fit it in as well) Bach Ma. Everything is going solo on buses (I might fly between some spots if I'm running short on...

    Felix de Azara

there are a number of animal species named after Spanish officer and naturalist Felix de Azara, including Synallaxis azarae, Akodon azarae, Dasyprocta azarae and Aotus azarae. My question is why is the specific name azarae (as if he was a woman) instead of azarai? Aotus and to a much lesser...

    Spectacled Porpoise beached in NZ

This species seems to be rare overall, so thought it might be interesting to some on here. There's a cute photo here (albeit dead): https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152146796301300&set=pcb.10152146797051300&type=1&theater Story here...

    egret in Singapore

taken at Sungei Buloh today: a little egret with stained legs, or a Chinese egret? (Or a reef egret I guess would be another option maybe?) It had a dark bill with some yellowy at the base of the lower mandible. The legs were yellowy-greeny. All the other egrets around were definite littles...

    Bird IDs from Singapore

taken at Sungei Buloh today. These first three I think is just a black kite but want to make sure (it was harrassing redshanks which didn't seem typical).

    Bangkok, female plaintive cuckoo?

quite a small cuckoo in Rot Fai Park in Bangkok. I think it is a female plaintive cuckoo.

    short-toed snake-eagle? Burma

pretty sure that is what it is, because of the dark hood, but the book says it is a vagrant to Burma so would like to make sure. It was at Shwesettaw (sort of near Bagan).

    bird of prey, Burma

taken from a distance obviously, perched on a hut, at Lake Inle. It had orange legs and beak (looks like eye or eye-ring as well), really noticeable white thighs. When it flew away the underwings were white but I don't know if they had any markings.

    western marsh harrier? Burma

taken at Lake Inle where both western and eastern marsh harriers occur. I figure this is a western due to the white face?

Malaysia (Bukit Fraser vs Cameron Highlands)

I last visited Bukit Fraser in 2006 and at that time the cheapest place to stay was the Puncak Inn at 55 Ringgits per night. Does anyone know if that is still the case? Also, I am contemplating going to the Cameron Highlands instead of Bukit Fraser because as a backpacker destination it is...

    finch from Labahe, Sichuan, China

heavy crops but someone should get this easily. The closest I could get was a female three-banded rosefinch (Carpodacus trifasciatus) but I'm using the China field guide which is rubbish, and I don't even know if three-banded is found at Labahe.

    Mustela altaica or Mustela kathiah?

see here: http://www.zoochat.com/733/mountain-weasel-mustela-altaica-342679/ Photos taken at Ruoergai, north Sichuan (on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau). The colour made me think yellow-bellied weasel but the white paws turned me to mountain weasel. See the comments on the thread. Thanks.

    bird of prey, Mongolia

something hopefully really easy for Northern Hemisphereans, but I can't work it out from the book....

    help for Japan, budget-ish

so I am half-decided on adding Japan to my current trip, probably around December/January in order to see Steller's sea eagles. Obviously I don't want to blow out my backpacker's budget but I gather Japan is also pretty expensive and those two things don't really go together. I'll be on public...

Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part three: 2013

In a couple of weeks I will be setting off again on another Asian trip. The previous two threads are http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=180538 (2009) and http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=207985 (2011) if you want to get up to speed. This one is a bit different to the others...

Longcanggou - how to get there!?

so I have been reading of this replacement site for Wawu Shan and Labahe called Longcanggou. I know it's near Wawu Shan somewhere, and have found there's a hostel or guesthouse or somesuch called Tiger Forest Resort where the birders stay. But I can't find anything on how to actually get there...

Hong Kong stop-over for 6 hours - suggestions?

I have a stop-over/lay-over/whatever it's called in Hong Kong for almost 6 hours on the 3 August, arriving 7.30am and leaving 1.10pm. I'm not actually sure if I can leave the airport or not, but if I can what would be the best suggestions for seeing some birds. Got to allow time for clearing...

    Zhouzhi Nature Reserve

has anyone been to the Zhouzhi Nature Reserve in Shaanxi (just west of Xian)? Apparently it is one of the best places to see golden monkeys. I'm wondering if it is readily accessible by public transport from Xian and anything else of relevance. thanks

    Wawu Shan and Labahe

what is the situation with Wawu Shan and Labahe at the moment? Are they both completely closed off, or only parts of them, or what? And are there any reliable or halfway-reliable red panda sites other than those two (that can be reached by public transport)? Thanks for any answers.

A WEEK IN SAMOA, May 2013

DAY ONE: ARRIVAL (9 May) Back in the tropics again. Thirty-one degrees of tropicality to be precise. Now I’ll be honest, but I hate the tropics. That probably sounds odd given that pretty much everywhere I go is in the tropics, but I can’t stand the heat and especially the humidity, I just put...

    visiting Russian nature reserves

can anyone give me some info on visiting the Zapovedniks in eastern Russia, specifically the ones near Vladivostok and Lake Baikal? I gather they are restricted access, but I can't seem to find any information on how or if they can be visited although some are said to have tourist trails or...

field guide for Mongolia and Russia

there is probably a thread about this somewhere, but what are the choices for field guides covering Mongolia and Russia (specifically the Lake Baikal area and Kamchatka, and anywhere in between those two)? And which are the best choices/combinations? Birds of East Asia by Mark Brazil seems like...

permits for visiting national parks/wildlife reserves

just a quick question. Does a visitor need permits to visit the national parks and wildlife reserves in China, and how does one go about obtaining them if so? Can you get them at the entry point as in other countries or do you apply in advance, or something else? Or does it vary depending on...
