    Fish

Found this dead fish in the pond at a small bird reserve I look after in North Devon. During the summer a small shoal of fish appeared in the pond, there is no stream coming into the pond it is only refilled when it rains. The only real views I got were their little noses poking above the...

Is this a Little Egret or perhaps a Western Reef Heron? Pic sent to me by a friend who is in Southern Spain. There are more pics but I thought I'd just do this one to start.

    Dorsal fin

Anyone got any ideas on what this Dorsal fin (plus an odd pointy fin off to the left!) might be? I was in the dunes above Perran Sands beach North Cornwall last Friday morning and noticed something odd out beyond a couple of surfers, but still quite close inshore. At first I thought Basking...

    Poo!

I found this poo in a bird reserve I look after this week. Two friends have both identified it as Roe Deer, which is interesting as there's only one gate to the reserve (about 2.5 metres high with barbed wire on top), and a chain-link fence about 5 feet high with barbed wire on top all around...

    What's this?

A number of these have recently been erected around a Marsh adjacent to a bird reserve I look after - anyone any idea what they are designed for - about 4 feet off the ground (or water level) and seemingly loosely packed with hay. I think the cylinders are about a metre long.

    Tawny Owl pellet

Took an owl pellet apart t'other day and found various bones, teeth and insect legs. I wonder if it possible to say what the two sets of jaws are from. I have Wood Mouse, Long-tailed Field Vole, Common Shrews and lots of Rats (inc juvs) in the reserve where I found the pellet. the insect bits...

    Hawkmoth caterpillar N Devon

Sadly the Caterpillar isn't in the photo! Sorry. But it is a small Willow tree that has had many of it's leaves pretty much completely eaten. I may of course be completely wrong (it won't be the first time!) but it certainly has a prodigious appetite, and looking up which Hawkmoths eat Willow, I...

    Fritillaries in Spain

Took these two pictures in Andalucia in the last few days. The first one was in a small lay-by on the road between Gaucin and Ronda. The other was high on the hills above Jimena de la Frontera above the Cork Oak forest. Any help with identification would be appreciated.

    Maldives Heron

I was asked recently about a small white Heron seen by friends in the Maldives. Not sure what the options are - Egret or Reef Heron? I'll try to get hold of the pic (off facebook) in due course. Done that!

    Feather mystery - N Devon

Afternoon inspection today of a small reserve I look after near Braunton N Devon this afternoon revealed another small pile of feathers. With several Black feathers and a smattering of white I thought it was going to be another Moorhen (two or three taken recently) but these feathers are far too...

    Sal September 2016

I was going to wait until I got home before I did a bit of a report, but hey it's too hot out in the sun, so I'll start now! Friday 16th. Flew Thompson from Bristol, arrived late afternoon. Taxi south to Santa Maria. The only birds I saw were a few waders by the road in a large pool just...

    Botswana (mostly)

Late September/early October we went on a trip to the Okavango delta. This was originally organised by a group of ladies from the local Tennis Club, including my better half. When I asked if I could join them, they all said "no!" However a few months later I was invited to join them, and...
