    BINS

Hopefully there should be a replacement soon. The guys running it had issues with Freewebs so are trying to migrate to a new system. It started in 2006 so there is a lot of information there - it's been a great resource over those years.

RX10 IV not focusing in AF or manual

Have you checked the Focus Mode Dial on the front. It's the one thing that is easily knocked. I've learnt to check that first when starting out for the day - I have it set to C (Continuous AF). Gi

    Ringed Spoonbill in Suffolk

Thanks, I'll do that. It was early morning and the light was poor.

    Ringed Spoonbill in Suffolk

Hi, Saw these Spoonbills last weekend on Aldeburgh Marsh, Suffolk. Any idea of the scheme please?. I think it may be a French scheme - Spoonbills | cr-birding - but the ring looks black rather than dark blue. Gi

    Greylag Goose feeding on bones

I witnessed this at Ramsholt Lodge Marsh, Suffolk last month. This Greylag Goose seemed to be feeding on some bones, likely a goose. I've crpped this video to be able to upload. This carried on for some minutes. Anyone seen this before? Gi

Sony RX10 1V the new boy.

Hi Mike, I set up the camera with these settings and found it much quicker to flip between between static and BIF so thanks for posting about it. Tested this out at Minsmere recently and it worked well - I was photographing the Whooper Swan when the Great Egret flew over. Previously I wouldn't...

I'll have a look at that thanks.

Sony RX10 1V the new boy.

That's interesting Mike. I've been using settings based on an older post in dpreview. Using that I swap between BIF and perched birds by pressing a Fn button to select pre-set settings using Memory Recall. Your way seems much quicker if you want to swap between BIF and perched more...

Sony RX10 1V the new boy.

As Niels has said, keep the other settings you've set up, but change the location of the focusing rectangle and resave for MR2.

Sony RX10 1V the new boy.

It's been a while since I set this up but try as follows: To programme the settings such as BIF: set up your required selections such as A, Iso, Focus Area etc. Then in the menu, go to Camera Settings 1, page 3 of 14 and go to the "Memory" option. Select which Memory location (1, 2 and 3 are on...

    Some recent ring observations

Really quick reply from Paul Roper of North Thames Gull Group. One that doesn't seem to be encountered much - ringed at Pitsea landfill in March 2017, seen at Bexley Tip, Kent in June 2018 then nothing until the last three weeks at Ipswich docks.

    Some recent ring observations

No sightings from the garden lately apart from the resident male Blackbird (detailed above). I did go for my first walk for a while to the local park and waterfront yesterday and found this colour-ringed Herring Gull - orange ring with black code UA6Z. Checking CR-Birding it seems to be one from...

    Night vision equipment for mortals

Hi Jan, I was really pleased with the footage. I only used the built-in illuminator - I actually turned it down a step as, on the first video, the eye shine was very bright. I had been tempted to purchase an external one but wanted to see how it would perform first - maybe on distance stuff it...

    Night vision equipment for mortals

I was tempted with getting a thermal monocular but they were outside the budget I had. I opted for a night vision monocular and went for a Bushnell Z2 6x50. Limited to the garden but tonight had a nice surprise with two Foxes. I couldn't see them at all but I heard a snap of a twig and switched...

    Some recent ring observations

I've now had feedback on the Greylag Goose. This was from Lee of the Hickling goose ring project The bird you saw was an adult female ringed at Hickling broad in 2012. This bird has been interesting as it has moved quite a way from the ringing site (moulting site) since being ringed. This bird...

Yes, you could be right. I have been emailed by a local birder who has seen this bird previously.

Netherlands (LWFG Special) - Dec 2016

I had a read of the paper, linked in the report (Lesser White-fronted Geese in The Netherlands: a review of trends, phenology, distribution patterns and origin Kees Koffijberg & Erik van Winden) and it states: "Reports of colour-ringed birds have clearly shown that the Lesser White-fronted...

    Some recent ring observations

No, not had a reply. I had a walk through the park today but most of the pools were covered in ice and no sign of the Little Egret.

Phonescoping - shots, settings and combos

Hi Mike, I can tell they're Spoonbills but maybe wouldn't have guessed at the mudflats and tidal creeks! Great video - talking of World Wetlands Day and feeding on rhizomes reminded me of watching a Purple Swamphen in the Ebro Delta, a fantastic wetland that I got to visit last February. This...

Phonescoping - shots, settings and combos

Nice video Mike. I ought to try more videoscoping. Spoonbills are great birds, last year there were good numbers in Suffolk, sadly didn't get to see the big flock that was up the coast. Gi

    Some recent ring observations

After doing the Big Garden Bird Watch this morning I went for my first walk this year. Going through my local park I saw a colour-ringed Little Egret. I had trouble seeing all of the code but think it was CCC 999. On research looks like it is from a UK and Ireland scheme so I have sent details...

Phonescoping - shots, settings and combos

Hi Mike, Nice videos, be interested to see more. Sorry to hear about your scope - that's bad news. I changed phone model in the Autumn, now have Huawei P40 Pro. Not had a lot of opportunity to use it, so far not as sharp as I was hoping, some of it due to the typical requirement for...
