    Well I use Nikon after making the same decision. (I used to live in Boca Raton incidentally Zackiedawg.) I strongly suggest you try them both. I hired a D200 and 40D and preferred the Nikon handling. I moved over from Sony due to lack of lenses.

    I'd agree entirely. I think with your budget and requirements I'd definately stretch to the 500mm then TC from there. Have you thought of renting both lenses for a weekend?

    Good point about the light for auto focussing. A 500mm f4 is a pipe-dream for me at the moment but I wouldnt swap the 300mm for the world as it's producing some fabulous results even in low light, with the TC. As you say, good luck in your decision!
