    Possible Ladder-backed/Nuttall's Woodpecker Hybrid

Possible Ladder-backed/Nuttall's Woodpecker Hybrid (US) I observed this bird on April 25, at feeders in Portal, Arizona. Ladder-backed would be the expected species, but looking closely at the photos, the amounts of white vs. black color on the head seemed wrong. They seemed closer to what...

    Wireless Transmission Message - D500

Wondering if any of you can help me out. Just purchased a D500, and working my way through Darrell Young’s “Mastering the Nikon D500.” A lot to learn, especially as it is my first full featured DSLR. Anyway, I am getting a message that comes up on my screen when I turn the power off, that I...

How to get started with Lightroom?

I have been away from these forums for a while. As I approach retirement this spring, I wanted to take a big step in photography, and I have purchased a Nikon D500 and Nikon 200-500 lens. Lots to learn. At the same time, I thought I’d better get Lightroom, as I have up until now used Apple...

    Footgear for Gambel (Alaska)

I will be going to Nome and Gambel next June, and would be interested to hear from any birders who have been there as to the appropriate footwear. I have a heavy pair of Sorel insulated boots, that I've used below 0F in Northern Minnesota, but they are pretty heavy. I'm hearing about NEOS...

    Flycatcher - South Dakota

This flycatcher was observed last weekend at LaCreek NWR in Western South Dakota. It sat at the top of a tree for quite a while, and exhibited typical flycatching behavior. I have my own guess, but I don't want to influence anyone's opinion. Thanks, for your help. Veagle - Dick Latuchie...

    Veagle's 2014 List

Well, I am getting started a bit late this year. I have been doing this documentation since 2009, and I guess I would be less than honest if I didn't say that doing the routine January birds in South Dakota is less than very exciting, particularly this year. All the finches that visited last...

    Veagle's 2013 List

Well, this will be my 5th yearly list. Last year was another great year of birding for me. In the last three years, I have had 395, 393, and 395 ABA species, so an obvious goal would be to hit 400 this year. This will be very difficult, without some travel. My wife will be retiring this...

    Victory 7 x 42 FL opinions?

I could not resist getting a pair of Victory 7 x 42's that were on sale, as the model is being discontinued. I am currently using Vortex Vipers, which I have been very happy with, but have had a few problems with the eyecups over the years. I will actually get them tomorrow, but would love to...

    Camargue Ornithological Park ?

I've got a question for anyone who has been to the Parc ornithologique de Pont de Gau. We visited the park, which included a variety of species in cages. Of course, we did not count any of these, but there were Black Storks nesting near the area. But I have noticed that no one seems to count...

    Birding in Paris

My wife and I will be in Paris for four days later this month, as part of a two week trip to France. Birding will not be the focus of this trip, but we will have a few days birding in the Camargue. I'm looking for any suggestions people might have about birding in Paris. We will be staying...

    Veagle's 2012 List

OK, it's that time again. Last year exceeded most of my expectations, although my totals for both SD (273 vs. 275) and NM (113 vs. 125) fell a little short of my goals. On the other hand I exceeded my projected total species by quite a bit (423 vs. 350), as well as new lifers (97 vs. 63). So...

3 Days in the Lower Rio Grande Valley

I recently had a business meeting in San Antonio, and have planned for a long time to visit the Lower Rio Grande Valley. All the usual specialty target species, and at the same time, I was hoping to hit two milestones that seemed within reach. First, I was pretty confident that I could get 27...

    Veagle's 2011 Year List

Last year was a wonderful year that I suspect will be difficult to duplicate. I was able to spend time birding in Cape May, Arizona, Florida, and Alaska, in addition to my normal territory. So how to approach the new year? I am hoping to visit the Rio Grande Valley, in Texas, and perhaps the...

    Costa Rica ID help needed

These are shots taken by my daughter, who isn't a birder (yet), and I have never been to Costa Rica. Taken in April-May 2008.

    Alaska Waterfowl

    US - South Dakota Ammodramus

I saw these birds today in Western South Dakota. What say ye? Grasshopper, or Baird's? I was hoping Baird's, but the unmarked breast has me thinking Grasshopper, which I've seen often. But I had heard that Baird's was spotted here earlier in the day, so I was definately hoping... Veagle

    Velbon Problem

I have a Velbon EL Carmagne 630A Tripod. One of its legs has no tension in it, so that it swings freely. Other than that it operates perfectly fine, and I have no reason to replace it, but I have not been able to figure out how to adjust it. Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks. Veagle

    Western South Dakota - Help?

I saw this bird this morning just east of Rapid City. I know the photo is not great, but it really has me stumped. Two ideas - female Lazuli Bunting, but I don't think the bill is right, or Philadelphia Vireo, which is somewhat unusual for the area. Cannot see an eye ring. My thoughts at...

    Grebe - SD, USA

We normally get nesting Eared Grebes in a local patch, and I had been thinking this was my first of the year, but now I'm leaning toward Horned Grebe, which I had only seen once before. Taken a few days ago, in western South Dakota. Veagle

    Veagle's 2010 Year List

Well, here we go again. Last year was my first full year of birding, and what a great year. Don't really know what to expect this year, except for probably fewer lifers. Some travel planned include a couple days in March in Florida, a day in April in Cape May, and a vacation possibly in...

How do You Record Your Sightings?

I am interested in how people record their birding sightings. Do you use a computerized system? A commercially available system like Thayers or AviSys? Your own excell spreadsheets or Access database? Manual record-keeping? Multiple systems? I use AviSys for my personal database. I then...

Lesser/Greater Scaup - western South Dakota

I saw 3 Scaup yesterday near Wall, SD. Lesser are much more common around here, but I have seen Greater Scaup a few weeks ago. These were the best pictures I got. What do you think? Veagle
