    Gull species - Ontario, Canada

This is a slightly old-ish photo, taken Oct. 30 20202 by my wife at a nearby storm water management pond. We both at first assumed it was a straight-up 4-cy (winter) Lesser Black-backed Gull, but when she posted a photo of this individual on an eBird list, it caught the attention of the regional...

    Cooper's Hawk or Sharp-shinned Hawk?

Eye colour not regional with these species. Can't imagine what sites you've been looking at, but try Cornell - great side-by-sides of the two species. Cheers, PC

    Cooper's Hawk or Sharp-shinned Hawk?

Second fugl on eye colour - useful for aging within a species, but doesn't say anything about which species you're looking at. I believe the hawk is, indeed, Sharp-shinned; can't see the tail at all well (which is my usual "go-to" feature for distinguishing these two) but the adult Coop should...

RFI-Hotels near (but not in) Bogotá

Hi Avery; Thanks, we went there - wish I'd found a place to stay near there! We had an insane 1.5 hr taxi ride (at an insane cost) to get there, through Bogota traffic; I had been on another birding trip to Colombia about 5 years ago, and had spent one day of that in Bogota - but it feels like...

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2020 edition)

Well, if you want to expand "Team U.S." to "Team NA", I have the following to add from Jan. 01 near my home: Rough-legged Hawk Snowy Owl Merlin Horned Lark Snow Bunting

RFI-Hotels near (but not in) Bogotá

Hi kb57, Thanks for the advice. The S.O. and I will be staying for three nights in Suba, a relatively green area of Bogotá, and taking day trips from there. I was just interested in having a (different) place where we could wake up to a good garden with birds in it. We settled on a cottage in...

RFI-Hotels near (but not in) Bogotá

I am thinking of spending a few days near Bogotá this December, can anyone recommend a hotel (within, say, one hours' drive of downtown) that has good birding right on the grounds? I ask because I'll be there without my own vehicle, and therefore relying on taxis; I don't mind using taxis some...

    A first trip to Peru

I hope people don't mind me hijacking this thread a little (is it possible to slightly hijack something? "Take this plane to Cuba!!! Or, if it's too much trouble, just drop me off in Ft. Lauderdale, that'd be okay, too..."). Anyway, sorry, Steve. I am planning to go to Peru this December...

Great Crested Flycatcher or Western Kingbird, Kansas, USA, April 2018

Agree with all that Kratter said. In addition, in the unlikely event that a Great Crested would show up in a situation like this, the stance would be quite different - more vertical, like a pewee.

    Blackpoll Warbler? Eastern Ontario, Canada

    Yes, Blackpoll - nice shot!

    Bogota Safety

I stayed very briefly in Bogota four years ago, in an area called Suba (La Colina). It was quite safe to walk around there during the day, but there are other parts of the city that are note. I would just ask the local people, they'll be very forthcoming. Peter

    Broad-winged Hawk

    Yep. Country's full of 'em.

    Addis Ababa Airport

Andy M.- Hi again; silly me, I forgot - Dawn made an eBird list (of course she did) at the airport, on our way out. And I remember now that, on arrival, we also had African Paradise-Flycatcher there. https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S38762902

    Addis Ababa Airport

Hi Andy M. She Who Must Be Obeyed (the wife) & I were there briefly in August 2017, and there was a small "green" area just outside the front of the Arrival/Departures area. I frankly don't remember all of what we saw (we had one night at the A.A. Hilton, so that sort of swamped my memory of...

    Ecuador from Dec. 2018

I would second Andrew and Larry here - "Ecuador", while a small country compared to say, Germany, has so much diversity that moving just a hundred km. or so can make a huge difference in the compositions of the list of expected birds; but conversely, knowing exactly where a bird is can really...

    Florida bird from Jan 2012

Yes, the combo of rump + pale supercillary is good indicator for WPWA. I've ringed quite a few, and the colour range is quite striking - from super dull ones like this, all the way to bright individuals that are almost as bright at the "yellow" sub-species.

Costa Rica - Road to "Valle de El General"

Thanks cafe birder. Agree, driving in CR not for the faint-of-heart, and also not for those in any kind of a hurry. My rule-of-thumb is to look at a route, estimate the time it would take me in Canada, and then immediately double it. But at least they have the sense to drive on the right side of...

Costa Rica - Road to "Valle de El General"

Thanks, knowing a rough estimate of the driving time from Baru to San isidro is useful.

Costa Rica - Road to "Valle de El General"

Hi Dan, Thanks very much! That sounds great, by Costa Rican standards! I do want to see if I can get to Los Cusingos, I have wanted to go there for years. Can you remember how long it took you to get from the coast?

Costa Rica - Road to "Valle de El General"

Hi all, I am going to be staying in CR for a week this December, and am thinking of spending some of our time on the Pacific near Dominical. I see there is a road from there (labelled #243 on Google) from thence into San Isidro de El General. I am thinking of visiting that area as well, but I...

    A trip to Costa Rica

Hi Kenza: I don't know about the Atacama or Punta Arenas, but I did spend some time near Santiago a few years ago. (But much depends on how you define "near" - it was a couple of hours' drive south that I did most of my birding). I was really charmed by an area called Laguna Torca - the...

    Baltimore Oriole

If it's a recent photo, this would be a "mature" (after-hatch-year) male, going through moult. Young, or hatch-year, males wouldn't have a completely black head like that. P.S. Marco, it's a good idea to identify where your submission is from, geographically, in the thread title. (Unless you...

    Swainson's or another thrush?

Looks good for Swainson's for me; the warm tones can very easily get lost in the filtered light (as in, in any shot in forest understory).

    Vancouver Island boat trips

Hi johnraven: Now, that's more like it! I somehow had not found that page before... we, unfortunately, we be flying back from B.C. before then, but I will contact them and see what I can find out. PC.
