    USA Outer banks Carolina

Thanks for help with ID folks. Struggling to ID the grackles, but enjoying the process. They all look quite scruffy. And yes of course Laughing not Franklins Gulls - my mistake.

    USA Outer banks Carolina

Totally new to US birding, but loving trying to ID birds in a new country. I fished on the pier at Avalon, Outer Banks, North Carolina and was surrounded by these amazing grackles trying to steal the bait. Pretty big; UK jackdaw sized; bright shiny things. Boat tailed (last image)? Later we...

    Pigeon with spots! UK.

Someone posted this on a local UK bird thread. The prey looks like a pigeon if you look at it's legs, tail feathers and size, but has a speckled breast. Not seen a pigeon domesticated or otherwise with a speckled breast like this. Any thoughts?

    Feathers Point Clear, Essex, UK

Thanks. Spot on. I'd looked at this very page and overlooked the amazing white striped feathers further down. Much appreciated.

    Feathers Point Clear, Essex, UK

Thanks for the suggestion, but Magpies have white and black primaries. These are just black.

    Feathers Point Clear, Essex, UK

Can anyone help ID these feathers? They were found yesterday on a bank near the estuary at Point Clear, Essex. Pretty sure they're not tufted duck, lapwing, moorhen, oystercatcher or any other black and white bird I can think of. Sorry I forgot to add something for scale. I would estimate the...

    Bird call Norfolk Broads UK

Can anyone help ID this call. There were at least 3 calling to each other, so it's not an unusual species. Sorry about the quality. Many thanks.

    Small birds Port Grimaud, France

That looks like them. Apparently introduced and established in many places across the world including Nice. Nice.

    Small birds Port Grimaud, France

About 8 of these birds were in Port Grimaud, France today. Very noisy, small (about goldcrest size) and unlike anything I'd seen before. I presume they are escaped aviary birds. Anyone know what they are? Sorry for the poor quality of the photos: I took them quickly using a mobile. Thanks.

    Predated egg

Sure. I get that we don't want to encourage egg collecting. This is a predated egg and I'm interested in what it is. Any suggestions how I might find out what it is? Happy to post elsewhere. It's only 30mm long so smaller than a moorhen which are av 43mm. Thanks for your help. Neil.

Pleased with my find this afternoon on Blakeney point. Pretty sure this is a long or short eared owl feather. Anyone got any ideas which one? Thanks.

    Feathers Waxham Norfolk UK

Can't work out what these are from. Found in the dunes at Waxham, Norfolk. Only thing I can think of is a bantam - though what a silver laced wyandotte was doing in the dunes is anyone's guess... being eaten by a fox?

    Norfolk – Reptiles and Amphibians

Amazed to find 20+ crested newt larvae in my pond this year in Barton Turf. I have found adult common and crested in the garden under logs, etc and sometimes run over in the road. Previous to this I'd not seen any breeding amphibians in the pond, just visiting frogs. Very pleased. I hope they...

Rescued a bird... What is it

I'd start by talking to your neighbour. It looks like a chicken to me.

    Feather Norwich Cathedral Norfolk UK

It would be good to see the other side too. I agree that it's not dark brown enough for a woodcock. Redshank?

I think that could be a woodcock. Neil.

    The Highlands and Islands Thread

Caper watch was great fun over the last three days. Good views on video today and yesterday of a male performing. Unfortunately no scope views on any of the days. Plenty of activity on the feeders with some great views of red squirrels and GS woodpeckers.

Great day's birding today in Abernethy Forest. A crested tit on the walk to Loch Mallachie. A number of sightings of crossbills around Forest Lodge. Unfortunately no Capers today at Caper watch. Also headed north and saw the American Coot.

    The Highlands and Islands Thread

I'm in Aviemore on a walking holiday with my better half this weekend (11th April). I also want to do some birding and I have the most recent edition of Gordon's excellent book which will be of great use. We did the same last year and saw some fantastic scenery and wildlife but didn't manage to...

    Norfolk birding

Long Eared Owl sat in the middle of the road just outside Barton Turf. Stopped the car and watched it for a good couple of minutes before it flew off. Similar views of the same species a couple of years ago at Smallburgh.
