Wearing white and talking while birding?

I've always thought this theory is logical. I don't wear white while birding but I've never been convinced it makes much/any difference what colours you wear. The loud talking of groups to me seems more likely to put off birds just going on experience.

I love Christopher Lee's reading of this poem. which I play when teaching it.

Request for help with a weevil id.

I have been persuaded by others that it is indeed an acorn weevil.

Request for help with a weevil id.

Yes that is the other strong contender. I thought the antennae looked more like nucum going on this Acorn Weevil | NatureSpot but I am not totally confident.

Compact Camera Suggestions? Upgrading from Canon PowerShot SX720 HS

What he said, although I have now switched to OM micro four-thirds. When I had a SLR and couldn't face carrying it I toyed with a number of cameras. The Canon SX50 was the best but I still missed loads of shots because of poor autofocus, delays between shots etc. Plenty of second hand Sony's...

Request for help with a weevil id.

A Curculio sp. Possibly - going on the antennae - it's C. nucum but any help welcome. Advice from other places seems to be rather split. Newbourne Springs, Suffolk 5/4/24.

Compact Camera Suggestions? Upgrading from Canon PowerShot SX720 HS

Seconded. In a different league not just image quality but the fact that it handles like a SLR.

Anyone used Camera in the Post?

This site Camera In The Post has the OM90mm macro at a very good price. I am aware they are 'grey' imports which doesn't worry me. A lot of my gear has been bought this way. I've have recommended HDEW before but this place is over £100 cheaper. Very good reviews on Trustpilot but keen to hear...

You will find the close focus poor by modern standards. Binoculars have moved on since then.

Uganda and Rwanda: 1 to 22 June 2024

I didn't stick to no further comments! I think it is the being shown it by a guide thing. I have done considerably more birding abroad without other birders than with them but I have still done a fair amount with other birders. I would not have a clue for most birds I've seen in those...

Uganda and Rwanda: 1 to 22 June 2024

We are well off subject so I will make this my last comment. For me, by some way, the biggest drawback is I get nowhere near as much satisfaction from being shown something as from finding it myself - even if the finding it myself thing could be questioned if I know that a particular site is...

Nikon Monarch Fieldscope vs Celestron Regal M2 80ED vs Vortex Diamondback - tough choice

I have the Nikon with the 30 - 60X eyepiece. I haven't personally compared the two but from what I have read the 20 - 60 is considerably inferior, although also cheaper.

Do you count heard only birds on your life list?

Half way to having ticked all the world's birds?

Do you count heard only birds on your life list?

As I said, everyone to their own. Pretty impressive that there were so many lifers available to you in one day. Somewhat surprised that you haven't seen these common species though to count of your life list. ;) I'm pretty sure that we're all in - rare - agreement about recording birds that...

Mongolia 2025 Snow Leopard, Pallas's Cat and much more - another attempt to get a group together,

Apart from the fact that I will be at work - I am a teacher - I will have just blown my budget on a trip to Bolivia. Otherwise I would have been.

Uganda and Rwanda: 1 to 22 June 2024

If you measure the success of a trip by the number of ticks than a tour is usually the way to go. I don't. I am looking forward to retirement and going away for months at a time again. I realise than being able to go away for 5 or 6 weeks makes in a better position than most but I really miss...

Do you count heard only birds on your life list?

When In Uganda will you be happy to tick this? https://xeno-canto.org/species/Pitta-reichenowi I certainly wouldn't have. I wanted this. But everyone to their own.

    3 but I haven't actually kept a year list since 1985.

Two people break 10,000 species, and on the same day? Can it be?

I would agree that can be the case in some circumstances. My point was rather that irrespective of the situation some people will just start playing a recording so they can quickly move onto the enxt one. I will hold my hands up to sometimes using recordings. I have one good friend who will whip...

Two people break 10,000 species, and on the same day? Can it be?

I think one of my issues is that for a lot of people playback is a first resort to see a bird. Not a last resort.

Two people break 10,000 species, and on the same day? Can it be?

Yes and I have the greatest respect for you. Your situation is very different to most birders. The disturbance with recordings is an issue and at some places a serious issue these days. I'd be lying if I said I never use recordings but I do so rarely. I almost never use guides for looking for...

Uganda and Rwanda: 1 to 22 June 2024

I often wonder that. I spent 5 weeks in Uganda, hiring a Landcruiser, staying in comfortable hotels, did the gorillas saw a shed load of stuff and spent less than any of these trips for three of us including flights.

Two people break 10,000 species, and on the same day? Can it be?

I'm not sure I've ever had a birder say to me that they 'count' birds heard only. I know a lot of birders including two of the top ten world listers. Now I have to admit it's not a conversation I've had often, and I've never had it with the two birders in question, so maybe people do but, if so...

'Short-changed!' I'd be on the edge of tears! It'd be nothing to do with numbers though.
