    Best Himalayan birding treks?

I visited the Indian Himalayas many years ago - Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir and Ladakh. I loved the high mountains and the birds, and would like to return before I get too old! I don't mind if I go to India or Nepal but would want it to be somewhere with the greatest avian diversity. I've been...

NL Pure strap lugs spinning tangle

Warning: first world problem ahead! As a daily user, I love the optics of my NL Pure 8x32s, but I've struggled with the ergonomics on several fronts. I've solved the problem of the ridiculously tight rain guard, which when removed always pulled the eye cups out of position, by swapping to the...

    Guide TD210 - any users?

Thinking of getting this as my first thermal imaging device. Will use it for scanning tangled ditches, reed beds, bushes and hedges on my local patch then use my binoculars to try to locate any heat sources. Will it be any good? It's far cheaper than eg the Pulsar or Zeiss models but I think...

    Swift numbers, UK

Swift numbers seem way down in our village in coastal east Norfolk compared to last year. Very worrying. Has anyone else noticed this? Sean

Olympus 800mm equivalent - no more detail than Nikon 630mm?

Hi all, I take my pictures with a Nikon D500 and 300mm lens plus 1.4 converter, giving a full frame equivalent of 630mm. I recently tested the Olympus 100-400mm lens on an EM1iii body, which is 800mm ff equivalent. To my surprise comparing 100% crops of test shots taken with the same settings...

    From Nikon D500 and 300mm to A6600 and 200-600mm?

Hi all, I'm more a birder than a photographer but I particularly love the challenge of taking pictures of passerines in flight during migration. I currently use a Nikon D500 with the 300mm PF lens and a 1.4 converter. It's a beautiful walkabout setup and it only weighs 1.9kg for both camera and...

Is there anything better than Nikon D500 for passerines in flight?

Hi all, My favourite sort of bird photography is photographing small flyover passerines during vismig sessions. I love my D500 with 300pf lens and 1.4 converter - its autofocus capabilities for this sort of thing are phenomenal! But the camera has developed a fault so before I get it repaired...

Why does a smaller objective give a wider field of view?

I've been using binoculars all my life and have literally only this week realised that x32 bins frequently have a wider FOV than their x42 equivalent models (eg Swaro ELs). This seems really counter-intuitive to me. Can anyone explain the reasons for it? Thanks Sean

    New APC 42 Stabilized

Kite have released new stabilised binoculars available as 12x42 and 16x42, fully waterproof. On first impressions looking at the specs they are not at the top of the range optics level I had hoped for. I have the 10x30 APCs and was eagerly awaiting these new ones, but the fov is still narrow and...

Has anyone tried the Kite APC Stabilised Binoculars?

Just wondering if they represent a decent improvement over the cheaper Canon 10x30 IS IIs... Can't get out to have a look through either myself at the moment, obvs... Thanks Sean

Best side by side illustrations of Caspian, YLG, Herring etc?

Hi all, Which publication in your opinion has the best lineup illustrations of the large white headed gulls in their different age groups so I can get to grips with tertials, coverts, primary patterns etc? I'd rather illustrations than photos ideally. Thanks Sean

    Suggestions for retirement project?

Hi all, Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I will be retiring within the next few years and I have been thinking about getting into some specific niche of nature study and really becoming proficient in the area. I'm a lifelong birder with a passing interest in other fauna and...

Shrike and Thrush, Mt Fuji, Japan

The thrush(one of a pair) was mobbing the shrike near the 5th station of the Gotemba trail on 7th August. I thought that the thrush was grey backed at the time but it is out of range so is it brown headed? And is the shrike bull headed even though the crown is grey? Thanks Sean
