    Grimley and Holt

Hi Dave, There is access to the other pits at the northern end, and that is where most of the passage waders and waterfowl are reported. The raised footpaths bisecting the pits are fine to walk along - most breeding waders (only Lapwings at the moment as far as I'm aware) tend to nest in the...

    Moth ID - East Cheshire

Hiya - this is definitely a Common Quaker (albeit a little washed out). Clouded Drab is a variable species, but usually shows a greater mix of brown/grey to the forewing and a less well pronounced subterminal line.

    Grimley and Holt

Hi Laurie, it was mingling with the Canada Goose flock on the east bank all the time that I was there yesterday. There were also a couple of Lesser Redpolls commuting between the footpath vegetation and the feeding station in a nearly large garden (the one with the chickens).

    Grimley and Holt

I haven't been to the Pits in a while, so the Barnacle Goose was a bit surprising to see - anyone know its origins? The 2 Stonechats were present yesterday, and there's a hefty finch flock feeding along the footpath to the south of Camp Lane Inn. I'll be scrutinising that area for Brambling in...

    June Moths - 2014

Luis Suarez doesn't half get around! Some interesting moths trapped at Box Hill recently, including the attached Wood Carpet, Red-necked Footman, Pretty Chalk Carpet and Satyr Pug. More here as usual.

That's a full-frontal Beautiful Brocade alright. Very nice.

Thanks, Tony. A slightly surreal experience! A pleasure, mate. Anytime. :t:

    June Moths - 2014

An interesting crambid in the garden moth trap back on the 12th was confirmed yesterday as the 2nd British record of Euchromius cambridgei, a mainland European species closely related to the well known immigrant E. ocellea. Not surprisingly, it was new for the garden! Pinion-streaked Snout...

This Sloe Pug from last night was a welcome addition to the garden species list.

    June Moths - 2014

Some nice moths starting to appear after what has been a fairly mediocre start to June here in terms of species variety. Most notable was a fantastic Great Oak Beauty which arrived last night- a first for the garden. The first Hoary Footman of the year was recorded on the fairly early date of...

3 Micros from Cheshire to ID

    2. is Matilella fusca, a Pyralid. Judging on ground colour, I think that 3. is most likely to be B. affinis, although as Paul says it is a tricky genus best separated by dissection.

    March Moths - 2014

5 Blossom Underwing and a White-marked (1st modern site record) were caught during a trapping session last night at Monkwood reserve- just north of Worcester. A full write-up of the session is now on the blog.

    March Moths - 2014

A male Lead-coloured Drab was caught in woodland on the outskirts of Worcester last night, amongst a catch of 69 moths of 9 species. Not a bad haul considering the temperature was down to 2 degrees by half ten. Note the 'feathered' antennae and curved apex...

    Birding in Worcestershire

The YBW was still showing well at Uffmoor Wood this afternoon, in holly at the end of the main ride. Photo and sound recording now on the blog here.

    Grimley and Holt

A wary Ruddy Shelduck was on the main pit at Grimley this evening (although it was gone a few minutes after I arrived) with 10 Lapwing, 3 Oystercatcher and a pair of Redshank. Images here. I notice a RS flew over Upper Bittell reservoir yesterday.

    Grimley and Holt

A pair of Oystercatcher were at Island Pool this afternoon, with 5 Green Sandpiper and 15+ Common Snipe in the adjacent flooded field. At least 5 Brambling were feeding with a large Goldfinch flock south of the Camp Lane Pits, along a footpath that runs along the western outskirts of Green...

On second viewing, it looks like an artefact caused by sunlight/shade hitting the leg at the moment the photo was taken!

    Grimley and Holt

Fairly quiet on the Camp Lanes Pits yesterday, but a female Goosander (which appeared to be colour ringed) was on the main lake with small numbers of Gadwall, Tufted Duck and Pochard. The floods have hit the local area badly, with the northern half of Grimley village starting to go under. Some...

    Mealy Redpoll? Worcs, UK

Looking back on the images, and after consulting with a number of others, it would appear as though none of the birds exhibit characteristics in line with those of Mealy. Doh. I did see Mealies today though, honest! I just didn't photograph them very well...

    Mealy Redpoll? Worcs, UK

What do you reckon to the 'redpoll' three images down on the link below? http://billsbirding.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/mealy-redpolls-ombersely.html First image doesn't do it any favours, but in the subsequent images the bird reveals nice pale flanks and a white rump. Could this be decisive of...

    Grimley and Holt

No sign of the Sibe late this afternoon (at least one nominate bird still present), but a Water Rail was feeding briefly around the NW corner of the causeway with Moorhens, and Green Sandpiper numbers had increased to 3- one individual even getting into a brawl with the local Kingfisher!

    Grimley and Holt

Two female Goldeneye were on the north side of the Pits yesterday afternoon along with a Green Sandpiper. I had a quick search for Monday's reported Siberian Chiffchaff, but without any luck.

    August Moths

Thanks Andy. Yes, it does seem that way. The garden's 2nd claim to fame, coming a few days short of the two year anniversary of a very lost Jersey Mocha. I might be in one of the better counties for moths, but I'm certainly in the worst for birds! ;) A Yarrow Pug was new for the garden last...
