Saw this bird in the backyard this morning. At first I thought it might be an American Tree Sparrow, but now I'm leaning towards a Field Sparrow because of the lighter upper mandible. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Chris B (:

    Purple Finch? - Ontario, Canada

Is this a Purple Finch or a House Finch? I'm leaning towards calling this bird a Purple Finch because of the overall wash of raspberry on the head, chest, rump and wings. The tail also appears to be more deeply notched then a HF (pic #1). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Chris B (:

Sharpie or Coopers *Graphic* - Whitby, Ontario, Canada

I'm leaning towards calling this Hawk an SSH, but I've been fooled too many times. Although in picture # 4 when the hawk is bending over it does look like a cap, indicating a Cooper's. I'm just not sure that the rest of the neck is that much different of a colour to qualify it as a cap. The...

What kind of Thrush is this? - Whitby, Canada

The below photos were taken this afternoon at the edge of a park/cornfield. The "Thrush" was in the lower section of a small tree that was covered in wild grapes. I didn't see this bird take any grapes, but several Robins and a Mockingbird seemed to be enjoying themselves. I'm not sure what...

    Unknown Warbler - Ontario, Canada

I have absolutely no idea what kind of bird this is, other than its most likely a Warbler of some kind(I think ;)). He/She was forgaging with a group of Black-Capped Chickadees when I noticed him whacking a caterpillar against the tree branch. I've tried to identify this little guy, but I've...

    White-crowned Sparrows

For the last four days I've had a pair of White-crowned Sparrows camping out in a 10' Spruce tree. I know there not over nighting in the tree but are returning each morning. By looking at my Sibley's it shows the area that I live in as being at the lower end of their migration range. Is it...

Confirmation on White-crowned Sparrow, Whitby Canada

I'm about 99 percent sure this is a White-crowned Sparrow. I've spotted two of them hanging out in and around the Norway Spruce. They seem pretty nervous and I haven't been able to get a shot of them together. I just wanted to make sure before I added it to my yard list as this is the 1st time...

    Gelatin Seed Cylinder

I'm going to try and make a seed cylinder using gelatin and some B.O.S., Millet and alittle bit of corn. I plant to make the cylinder about 8 inches high and 4 inches across. I've figured out what to use as a mould, and how to get the seed out. I guess my major question would be, How much...

    Gull/Tern Id - Mexico

I'm looking for some help on id'ing these two birds. The first shot I think is a Bonaparte’s Gull. I'm not a hundred percent sure, because all the pictures I've seen they look like they have darker backs and wings. A confirmation would be greatly appreciated. The second bird is a somekind of...

What signs of spring have you seen?

I know the official start of spring is still a week away, but I was wondering what (bird) signs people have been seeing. For me a single Red-wing Black Bird has shown up in the garden, along with the first American Robin. Overhead I've seen several flocks of Common Grackles and a single...

Juvenile Northern Shrike? - Ontario, Canada

First off I apologize for the quality of the pictures, this bird was I my yard yesterday but I didn't manage to get a shot. So as you can imagine I was alittle excited when I saw him sitting in my Spruce Tree. In my haste to snap a picture I had the camera settings all wrong. So my question...

Sharpie or Coopers Hawk, Ontario, Canada

I'm not sure if this a Sharp-Shinned or a Coopers Hawk. I first saw him this morning sitting on the top of a feeder pole. He wasn't interested in the gray squirrel that was feeding near the pine tree in my yard. But once the squirrel cleared out the hawk flew into the pine and chased the House...

    Strange Formation

I was out walking my dogs this morning when I heard some Canada geese honking. I looked up and observed a very strange formation fly overhead, it consisted of 3 geese and a single male mallard. The birds were in a vic formation with the mallard to the right of the flight lead. To the mallards...
