    African Marsh Harrier - Botswana

So that leaves the second question by Barney: does anyone have a photo of a young bird they are willing to share? Niels

    6 Full Days in Panama

Cannot answer everything, but I was at the lodge as part of a package where we had three nights at the tower and five at the lodge. This was in August and also rainy. There was one day lost to rain, the others were manageable. There was guiding every day and the day in the lowland was included...

    My tablet dilemma

I learned recently that you are expected to throw away your Samsung device after five years when the security updates stop. My 10 year old iPhone still receives security updates, so over the lifetime, cost might be different than you think. Niels

    Gruiformes and Charadriiformes

When I see the work "Brachvogel" I am reminded of the word brokfugle in Danish, which according to my understanding and memory of things I heard when I was young, would be used in older literature and among hunters for short-billed birds such as Golden Plovers and Lapwing. Niels

Best birding trips in Central/South America?

Especially in August, I would recommend the northern end of Colombia. I already mentioned El Dorado Lodge above Minca, it is a great place. A guide is not included (opposite of Canopy), so you need to arrange that yourself. Breyner Tarazona (spelling of first name?) is a great choice in that...

Best birding trips in Central/South America?

Reading again that you plan on early August, more votes for Colombia. From experience, Central America at that time can be hit and miss with the weather. Niels

Best birding trips in Central/South America?

Of countries in CA and SA, I would probably recommend these: Santa Marta Mts and Tayrona in Colombia (Stay at least part of the time in El Dorado reserve above Minca, a couple of more days in Minca and max two days in Tayrona) Western Panama with birding in the area around either Boquete or...

San Gerardo De Dota, Costa Rica, April 20204

White-throated Thrush should have a white crescent below the throat, strongly contrasting with the brown breast. This bird does not show that. What it truly is might be difficult to say, but I have nothing better than Mountain thrush mentioned by butty. Loos a bit pale for that, but cameras...

Thrushes, all different. April 2024 Florida. Sorry for back of camera photos but please ID if possible

I think five has just as much of an eye ring as three, and the branch is hiding the area of the supraloral (above the line from eye to bill). Niels

A dark reddish brown color could be Umber?

    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

Depends on whether it is current or historical distribution you think about. As far as I remember, Dominica is the only place with a Kalinago territory today. The Kalinago in St. Vincent were forcibly moved to Roatan from where they moved to Belize, it seems. Niels

    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

Both East Caribbean and Lesser Antillean would to my mind indicate inclusion of Grenada and St. Vincent wrens, which was not indicated by Kratter. Niels

    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

I would like to see the arguments for keeping these together, but that is an aside. For this group, I agree that I cannot come up with a simple geographical name that fits (and I did live in Dominica for 15 years, so have some local knowledge). I could support the notion by pbjosh of using...

One more Kingfisher - Tarcoles River, Puntarenas, Costa Rica March 2024

Most likely correct, I find it difficult to see if there are white on the wings due to the image being small. Expecting no white spots, then it is correct. Niels

    AOU-NACC Proposals 2024

First off, thanks for not including Rufous-naped for any of the daughter species. Regarding humilis, I do not have experience, but the image in Howell and Webb makes Rufous-crowned an option -- is seems to have rufous more limited to crown (and admittedly, rear upper neck) than other, locally...

Tarcoles River, Puntarenas, Costa Rica March 2024

    Subspecies groups and future splits

The throat color of torridus is described as greyish-purple to greyish-green. There should be a name out there for such a color. Selasphorus (flammula) simoni has in the past been named Cerise-throated H. Niels

Limburg Netherlands - Flamingo but which one?

Not an expert on Flamingos, but on the better images there seems to be a grey wedge going down into the black tip of the bill. This seems better for American Flamingo, Chilean should have a straight delimitation between black and grey. Could possibly be some other African or Eurasian species...

One thing in agreement with Gray-cheeked is the grey flanks. I am not sure many spots would be visible from this angle even if they were there. Agree with Butty on getting home and upload actual photos. Niels
