And a very happy winner I am indeed, thanks to Birdforum and Zeiss - I'll post a review after I've received them in July!

    Water Shrew ? Cheshire

Thanks John, I felt a bit daft writing "buzzing" but it was such a strong impression that it was that sort of movement I thought I would describe it that way! Wish I'd not sold my trail cam now - could have set it up in the ditch. Reported to the Cheshire Mammal Group. Cheer, Peter

    Water Shrew ? Cheshire

Thanks will do - there must be a Cheshire group - I'll have a Google

    Water Shrew ? Cheshire

Hello all, on a morning walk last weekend I was having a look at a water filled drainage ditch which feeds into a stream system with ponds nearby, when a very small mammal swam across the surface towards some overhanging brambles. My first impression was of a small black mammal "buzzing" across...

Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast

Corncrake showed well from the road this evening and was in pursuit of a Grey Partridge for much of the time - fascinating to watch the behaviour between the two birds. Also got good views of both legs and no sign of ringing - which rules out an introduced bird from the south I believe?

    UK Herps 2015

After two hours searching found this large female Adder at Loggerheads, North Wales today - spent a short while taking photos at 300mm and 420mm so as not to disturb.

    Red Grouse / Red Squirrel

We saw loads of red squirrels at Formby last saturday just before 10am - including two crossing the road just beyond the ticket booth - I think the key is arrive early and take the squirrel walk on the left about 70m in from the gate - some peanuts would help tempt them in too from our...

Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast

Laughing Gull showed well this evening at New Brighton - from 7pm onwards - given recent reports from over the river guess it could be roosting at New Brighton then going to Seaforth during the day?

    Donna Nook UK - confirmations

Hello all, not had much time for birding the last six months and could do with confirmation of the two attached from this weekend - I believe Yellowhammer [but the markings on the head left me with some doubt] and Rock Pipit [fairly sure on this one given the streaking but some mipits around!]...

Tanzania - Arusha NP last few IDs

Thanks very much Tib78 - now I look again in Helm it's all so straightforward ;) the angle was putting me off on the barbet honest! Cheers

Tanzania - Arusha NP last few IDs

After a visit to Arusha NP last week [a day's R&R following climbing Kilimanjaro] I listed around 80 species - most of which I've ID'd with the Helm guide to East Africa but I'm left with a few puzzlers: First one looks like a juvenile and it was raining but I can't get close to an ID -...

    Only a week to go

The wild swamp loop had lots of warblers [still haven't got a definite ID for two species!] and at least three species of snakes a fortnight ago - enjoy!

Key species and sites - Orlando and surrounding area - April 2014

Just a few highlights of some of the key species from the last fortnight in case anyone's out in Florida soon [I will try and get a proper trip report done sometime...]: Bald Eagle - one seen over the lake at Magic Kingdom, pair on road to Boggy Creek airboats - one roosting on telegraph pole...

And I think you can use Freedom of Information Act requests - at least with Natural England - to ask for copies of all relevant records - emails etc if you need to?

Nikon 300 f4 plus tc vs 80-400 vr

Hello - I hired one if the new 80-400 VRs for a long weekend and was very disapointed in the low number of keepers compared with my 300mm f4 plus 1.4tc - I won't be buying one now but can recommend a hire as a very good way of deciding!

    Crossbill - enough for Scottish?

Flock of 12 or so Crossbills feeding on Saturday morning on the west side of Loch Morlich. Had brief views until they flew on into the forest. They were feeding on Larch and whilst I didn't get any sound recording [which I'm kicking myself for] my general impression was that the calls were...

    Late May birding spots?

Also worth a look at Jos's trip report on here if you haven't already seen it - I'm in exactly the same situation in late April - having been once before and probably getting permission for a couple of half days birding. I can second the Gatorland suggestion and my plan is to hit some of the...

Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast

I thought it was looking a bit "buffier" on Sunday than some of the shots I'd seen - plumage shows well on this shot when it was in alert as the Meadow Pipit flock flew to a new feeding spot.

    Nikon 300mm f2.8 VR ll

There's a VRI at a bargain price of £2350 on one of the photography forums at the moment. Not sure about VRIIs but I paid £2600 for a VRI and then sold it for a profit - even after I'd paid for a Nikon service on it to correct some faults. What I would say is I wouldn't buy a second hand lens of...

    Nikon 300mm f2.8 VR ll

I had to sell my 300mm f2.8 VR I and get a 300mm F4 - which I use with the 1.4TC. I'm counting the days until I can afford another f2.8... For the money I think the f4 is a bargain but with our traditional british gloomy weather the f2.8 gave me about twice as many keepers - although the better...
