    China 2010

Thank you Frogfish and Mike That's very kind you. Yes indeed Mike, southern Yunnan is rich in just-in-China species, but the Gaoligongshan and western Yunnan are much richer and a far better experience in many ways. Best regards from a ridiculously-polluted Beijing (the attached screen grab...

    China 2010

Thought that there may be some interest in my records from a birding trip to Xishuangbanna, southern Yunnan recently. (There are some other of my China-birding reports as well as my survey of the birds of the Wenyu River, Beijing on the same page): http://www.chinesecurrents.com/birds.html...

    China observations

Took the public bus from Shanghai to Yancheng last Wednesday. Spent two days in the reserve area, and then caught the train to Nanjing, where I birded Purple Mountain for two days. My trip report and photos are here: http://www.chinesecurrents.com/wild_side.html

Just back to Beijing following a four day trip to Jiangsu province (2 days at Yancheng and 2 days on Purple Mountain in Nanjing). Even managed to find a bird I'd never seen before. My trip report (with lots of photos) is here: http://www.chinesecurrents.com/wild_side.html

    Tearing down the nets

Yes I know this. But, at long last, there is hope: http://www.chinesecurrents.com/nemo.html Li Feng (jpeg from the China daily below) is the inspiration for the Beidagang heroes. These activists have, in turn, inspired many more groups up and down the country to get out there and tear down...

Thank you Mike I've sometimes wondered what delights Lantau might offer. Great start. And looking forward to reading about your discoveries. Cheers. Steve

    Tearing down the nets

Couldn't agree more Jeff... "You do what you can do". You can see some overwhelmingly sad things here at times, but I take much heart from the young, local birders and their determination to make things a lot beter than they are presently.

    Tearing down the nets

Thanks Thirudevaram for posting photos of a vile practice. On the subject of Shanghai, there is a very active local volunteer group that does great work in destroying many nets and making it harder for the people in the shots posted above to make a living. But the main task is indeed...

    Tearing down the nets

I'm just back to Beijng after a rather long and indulgent holiday in a well-known birding spot. Despite the jet lag, I attended the Rang Houniao Fei conference in Beijing today. It was a coming together of many of the key activists in the bird protection movement in China. Among the...

    China 2010

Wenyu River, Tongzhou, Beijing Bewick's Swan and "Whistling" Swan. The latter is, I am told, the first record for China. "Whistling" Swan breeds in Chukotka (far eastern Siberia). All but a few winter in North America (has been recorded in Japan apparently). I found it on the 25th November...

    Tearing down the nets

On Wednesday, shortly after the successful release of the 15 Oriental White Storks that had been nursed back to health, another two storks were found to be in difficulty, more than 100 miles along the coast (in "Happy Island" county). Sadly, one later died. The translated report from...
