Love the comparison pics of the two Harriers! That needs to be in a book somewhere. Something I never realized or hadn't thought that much about Hong Kong - you have your residents, migrants from the north, AND the possibility of tropical species from the south such as Olive-back Sunbird and...

    Ng Tung Chai, Hong Kong

Fantastic post and a great bird Mike. They must stay more tropical as they are quite common in SE Asia as I'm sure you know. I echo the other comments about your new camera and the operator of it.

Wow, what a great kick off to 2022! Good thing the reed and bush warblers sing.... Not too many flight shots of Japanese Quail that sharp around indeed. Congrats on a full and complete thrashing of your old record. I tried for 100 species on one 8km stretch of road 2 springs ago in a day and...

San Tin Fishponds (and beyond), Hong Kong

Hi Mike, I will withhold comments about you calling below 10 degrees chilly. Hong Kong seems to be the place to be in December, some great East Asian species and fantastic photos as well. I especially enjoyed the winter plumaged Black-faced Buntings - good memories of those.

Wowsers on the Buttonquail! Difficult to photograph indeed!

That's the proper way to photograph Yellow Bittern and beauty Whiskered Tern flight shot!

Some great species there Mike. Love the phalaropes and the photo of them doing their typical thing. Beware the fire ants!

Panjin Birding by the Old Fat Man

Some great species there Owen. That Liaohekou Nature Reserve sounds like a place to revisit for sure. Is that the one that has Red-crowned Cranes? Good numbers of Oystercatchers and Avocets. Congrats of the Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler! Another small warbler to look out for that spends a...

White-throated Rock Thrush male! Stunner! Love the egret and heron shots as well. Great to hear about the rookery and the fact that it is behind a fee :)

Wow Owen, what a post!! I must admit that every time I see a Saunders's gull in breeding plumage my heart jumps. Some great species there including the Pied Avocet and Black-tailed Godwit. Of interest, Bar-tailed Godwit far far far outnumbered Black-tailed (100:1) on the east coast of...

Thanks Mike, I wasn't sure about what you meant regarding a pdf but just finished submitting T69 under the observation report section of that website. Was able to add a photo, etc.. and I believe it went through. I'm not sure how well known the small breeding site in Liaoning is as there were...

Interesting bird indeed. Very special to be able to "get to know" a specific individual. All of my other photos of this one are by itself so unfortunately there's no more size comparison opportunities. It's so special to be able to know exact individuals to form such a clear link between...

Hi Mike, great to hear about the total number now over 5000, indeed a success story. I always love to hear how the DMZ is actually aiding the spoonbill recovery. Here's one photographed by Zhuanghe, Liaoning. I forget if I ever tracked down where exactly it was number banded. T69 is the number.

Panjin Birding by the Old Fat Man

Love this report Owen and fantastic photos as well. The Saunders's behaviour is of a nesting bird? It's too early for them to have eggs now though? I've read that they nest on "undisturbed" sandy beaches in the Panjin area. Great to see them in full breeding plumage - one of the best looking...

Some great pics Owen and some good species. Sorry to hear about your "expert" that wasted a day for you!

Love the photos Mike and some great birds there. Love the pic of both spoonbill species together. There aren't too many places to get such a picture. I wish I was still in south and east Liaoning to welcome back the Black-faced Spoonbill. I think they usually arrived in late April or early...

Costa Rica (Pavones area) Aug, 2012

Hello, Going through old photos and these two from Costa Rica in August of 2012 won't go into ebird as the species I have labelled them as without having to add a specie to the suggested list. Just wanting to have more opinions before I add a specie to the ebird suggested list. Thanks so much

    Terns - Bali, Indonesia Feb. 10, 2015

These photos are from Feb. 10, 2015. All in the same place at the same time. Not sure if different colour bills indicates different ages or different species.

Love that Egret shot Mike and both Spoonbills in the same day is always a treat. Like the Ferr. Duck photo as well. Tom

    Vietnam 2 species

Going through some old photos. These were taken in Feb. 2016 in Vietnam along the road between Dalat and Mui Ne in a protected area of forest. Highish elevation but not crazy high. Many thanks for your thoughts. Tom

Panjin Birding by the Old Fat Man

Hi Owen, Dandong is a great birding destination. The Yalu Jiang (River) from the ocean to the Great Wall section there can be really good for ducks in the winter. Male Smew can be seen along main road along the river there as well as many others. The grounds around the great wall section are...

Panjin Birding by the Old Fat Man

Nice record Owen. I've only seen Hazel Grouse in Liaoning at very high elevation in forest (Phoenix Mountain near Dandong). The way you described it reminded me of Japanese Quail as well. I've also seen Daurian Partridge once in a similar manner. Quite an experience to have one fly right...

Congrats Owen. Love the Grebes out of water shot. They look funny and very unusual to see them out on the land like that indeed. Horned Grebes are always nice. Nice pics.
