    Winter Journal

I was going to comment yesterday during an exploratory visit but didn't and now Ed has beat me to it. I completely agree. Keep at it and congratulations on doing so. I hope that others will join you here as it's a great way to get support and encouragement.

Kestrels from my studio window.Life studies

Well I'll piggyback on Ed's comment here to say what a great collection of recent work. It's nice to see how far you've come with field sketching and watercolor! I have no idea why I happened to check the forum today, after being absent for many, many months. But this was a nice surprise. Hope...

    Well said. Happy holidays Arthur.

    The Abstract Bird

Thanks BirdingJohnson. I was so taken with an eastern race Palm Warbler and his richly colored surroundings today that I did this more realistic watercolor.

    The Abstract Bird

Thanks Arthur. I'm glad to hear from you again. As Ed says I hope that is an indication that all is well with you. My own presence has been very limited, partially due to the overall quietness of the forum, but also because I want to stick with showing mainly abstract work here rather than...

    My Pictures

Always a pleasure to see them develop Arthur. And I'm happy to hear that your wife is on the mend.

    The Abstract Bird

Good luck Pete. I've found that combining field sketching with more abstract work in the studio is very rewarding. As I think I mentioned on your thread I do also take photos. But I find that I almost never want to use them unless I've actually sketched the bird in the field. I think this gives...

    The Abstract Bird

Thanks Pete, Marie, Pete I forgot to mention scopes on my lengthy reply to your post about sketching kit. I have one that I'm happy with, but I also have a very heavy tripod. And I have woodland birds. If I lived near the coast where I would see more waders I'd probably bring it with me far...

    Art and Birding Equipment plus

Pete, I'm going to answer this question as well as some of the ones you asked on my own thread, The Abstract Bird. You should take what will encourage to go out and work and not discourage you from leaving home. For me that means keeping things very light. I've found that if all I need to...

    The Abstract Bird

Thanks Marie. Good luck, and much enjoyment, to you if you do decide to use birds as subjects. The first thing I learned about portraying them is how little I knew about them, even though as a birder I thought I knew them! But getting to know their structure better for artistic purposes has also...

    The Abstract Bird

Two new multi-block woodcut prints, both based on field sketches: a crouching, hunting Green Heron and a juvenile Ruby-throated Hummingbird perched on the twig of a Canadian Yew in our backyard.

    The Abstract Bird

Can't seem to get away from Green Herons, though these are not adults but three very young birds. Woodcut. 6x8 inches images alone, Daniel Smith water-soluble relief ink on Shin Torinoko paper. Edition of 32.

    The Abstract Bird

Hi Manuel, I'm happy to hear that you like the heron and dragonfly linocut. It's starting to be dragonfly season so I'm sure I'll be sneaking a few more into future work. I hate to see bird migration end but at least it's replaced by butterfly and dragonfly season.

Penguins with personality! I think that you are especially good at getting a certain character into many of the animals/birds that you portray.

    The Abstract Bird

Thanks Gaby. Here's the newest print: a small, very simple hand-colored linocut of Green Heron with Eastern Pondhawk just far enough away not to have caught his attention. (The paper is actually cream-colored not bright white so the color is off in that respect).

    Shents Scribbles

Arthur is right! You've always had a very natural touch with watercolor, something I think that most people lack at least when they start. Keep at it. Even if there's little comment or encouragement here hopefully you yourself will be able to see how much you're improving and that will give you...

    The Abstract Bird

Thanks Paul. Yes it seems extraordinarily quiet here. I was just thinking of that recently and how exciting it used to be. I'm not sure of the reasons but I imagine there are many. Still it's sad to see how quiet it's become. I'm trying to stay true to my desire to keep most of my work shown...

Extremadura Fieldsketching Trip-monfragüe & La Serena ,april 2014

All very striking, and very accomplished. Much as I like the pen and ink I'm becoming more partial to the watercolors.

    The Abstract Bird

A four block woodcut with one block being cut twice(red and pink). Blackpoll Warblers in fall plumage eating the fruit of Swamp Dogwood.

    The Abstract Bird

Thanks Ed. I'm happy I stuck to my guns on this one and kept it fairly abstract. One thing with prints as opposed to painting is that it's always much harder to just add a splash of color unless you plan it from the start. So if I wanted to change anything now I'd have to cut a new woodblock...

    The Abstract Bird

Well I feel like I'm finally living up to the title of my thread - the abstract bird. This is a multi-block woodcut of two Common Mergansers, a Pied-billed Grebe, and a much more unexpected Red-necked Grebe all seen on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia this winter.

    The Abstract Bird

Thanks Ed. Most of the waterfowl are starting to make their way north so the next subjects will soon be my warbler favorites, though they don't seem to pose as well as the grebes and such.

    The Abstract Bird

First thing I've been pleased with in quite a while, even though it's just a quick watercolor sketch. A Common Merganser, Pied-billed Grebe and two Bufflehead all seen today in the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
