Winchester 12x50 OEM porros, who makes these?

Well it seems the root of the problem is that these binos are not very sharp AND have huge amounts of CA which makes focusing them almost impossible. Well, the final word is stay away. Hopefully this thread will get picked up in some search engines.

Winchester 12x50 OEM porros, who makes these?

Well they came in sooner than expected. The ergonomics are pretty good. I like the one piece rubber covered design. The "less complex" closed bridge is nice too, IMO. I've only had 3min to play with them at work so keep an eye for the full...autopsy after the weekend. Pros: -Build very good...

Winchester 12x50 OEM porros, who makes these?

    What about Springfield?

Winchester 12x50 OEM porros, who makes these?

I won't be bummed either way. These cheapie binos make great gifts. I'll be pitting it against my "$40" Olympus 12x50. BTW, I've seen the other Winchester branded binos and they do look awful but this pair seem to be totally different at least in appearance. The big difference seems to be...

Winchester 12x50 OEM porros, who makes these?

I stumbled across these on the net and was intrigued by their design and on-paper specs. They are obviously OEM but I can't seem to determine which. The design is so different that its hard to tell. Its decently wide angle with 66deg AFOV. Stock photos show a light green coating on the...

    Measuring brightness objectively?

The thing about using a light meter is that your results are absolute and not relative per test so assuming your lights/meter are consistent, you can compare results from one day to results from another.

    Measuring brightness objectively?

Wouldn't it be pretty easy to measure absolute brightness of a bino or scope by putting it in a studio with controlled lighting and filling the entire field with some grey background while putting some sort of light meter behind the eye peice in black box so its shielded from all light except...

Zen ED2 7X36 available on ZEN Ray for pre order

Must be nice being a customs guy. You get to play/sample all the new and exotic toys without paying for them.

    A Very Happy Zen-ray Owner

IMO, ZR can correct many of their shortfalls with their ED2 line without much if any increased cost in the bottom line.

Need help disassembling Nikon 8x30 hinge

I got a pair of fixer 8x30s and I got it mostly apart but the hinge is puzzling and I don't want to break anything. I've removed most of the moving parts from the hinge but there is still an internal tube that is preventing me from separating the 2 housings. I need to remove this tube but I...

    Budget 8x30 porros/8x30 porro "sleepers"

I'd love to get an EII but I can't seem to find any for sale in the US new or used.

Best quality control among the big 3 EUROs?

You can just do your own QC by buying more than 1 pair and keeping the one(s) that pass

    Budget 8x30 porros/8x30 porro "sleepers"

ER isn't an issue for me which is why I love my classics so much. Steve, when you say your Raven is a "better binocular", what are you referring against?

    Budget 8x30 porros/8x30 porro "sleepers"

How do the Yosemites compare to the Vortex Raptor/EO Raven? They seem like almost the same OEM design. I want to like them but they seem to lack FOV compared to the wider classics.

    Budget 8x30 porros/8x30 porro "sleepers"

Which classic or modern 8x30s stand out for any reason whether its pure performance or compactness or uniqueness or value, etc, etc.

    Nikon 8x32SE, 8x32EDG, Zeiss 8x42FL and Zen-Ray 7x36 ED2 at the OK Corral

A chemical finish process which actually reacts with the material will have a much less chance of separation than simply "coating". These chemical processes have been around for a while although some of the tougher ones are a bit pricey.

Was "Jena" only used for DDR optics?

    Ok, I think I have a Pre-WWII copy then.

Was "Jena" only used for DDR optics?

I have a really old pair of binos marked "Carl Zeiss Jena" but with a "Germany" stamp, not "DDR". Did pre WWII Zeiss ever use the brand "Carl Zeiss Jena"? Or do I simply have a really early "DDR" copy that didn't come with a proper "DDR" stamp?

    Why no Zen-Ray's on E-Bay?

    Theres already a 8x43 ED2 on Astromart.
  20. S

    Why no Zen-Ray's on E-Bay?

I think you'll see them for sale first on forums like this one and other optics specific sites like Astromart and Cloudynights before hitting ebay. Ebay is a catch 22 since there is no precedent, its hard to say how many people are actually looking there. Of course, there's also the problem of...

Zen Ray ED2 8x42 and 10x42 evaluations and review

The outer lens elements aren't dielectrically coated, its the internal glass prism that is so you don't have to worry about cleaning the outer lens elements in any special way.

    BEST 7x42

308 did say "Knowingly". Perhaps ZR should have some minor piece left unassembled and slap a "Assembled in USA" sticker on them so as to ease the minds of people like 308. You can't even get an American car without foreign parts but not many people know this so it doesn't burden their minds...

    Nikon 8x32SE, 8x32EDG, Zeiss 8x42FL and Zen-Ray 7x36 ED2 at the OK Corral

I doubt ZR could fix the issue within 30 days even if they sent word out to the factory last week. It might be more cost efficient to offer a service to replace the offending part at cost although I'm not sure how much work it would be to disassemble an ED2 and re-seal/argon purge/water test.

Best place to buy new Russian binos?

I'm looking for a pair of BPC 8x30s and I've come across quite a few places but the all seem to have their "issues". Russianoptics.com only has 2nd grade units and binocularsmart.com is a bit pricey. Any other places?

    Nikon 8x32SE, 8x32EDG, Zeiss 8x42FL and Zen-Ray 7x36 ED2 at the OK Corral

Perhaps someone at Zen could simply take apart a pair and check for sure. This could easily be solved in a day if one were to sacrifice a pair.
